Holy ****. Australia A kept beating Zimbabwe and England in the mid 90s ODIs. The Benson & Hedges finals were between Australia A and Australia and they were very competitive games.
Cynically, the selectors picked Pistol to be 12th man for the Australia team so that they'd have a better chance of winning.

The Aus A side had Hayden, Langer, Ponting and Bevan batting for them so it's not surprising they were competitive.

most of that batting line-up were a good 3-4 years away from becoming good international players though (bar bevan, who became a good odi player quicker, and never got a shot in 99/00/01)

Most of them probably could have established themselves sooner if given the chance. But such was the talent in Australian cricket at the time.

Hayden actually was dropped after struggling against good pace bowlers in the mid 90s iirc.

He struggled against Ambrose. For an opening batsman trying to establish themselves at test level it's hardly surprising. Ambrose was a beast. One of the top three bowlers I've seen in my time next to pigeon and Steyn.

Ambrose is joint top with McGrath for quicks in my lifetime for me. It's funny in retrospect that a young opener was given a spell for struggling against the absolute best of the era. Harsh.

Such was Australia's standards at the time.

If Swepson debuts for Australia, QLD could field a full team (minus the keeper) of Aussie reps.

Burns Renshaw Khawaja Lynn Forrest Reardon xxx Cutting Swepson Stanlake George.

This did not seem remotely likely a few years ago.

True, it also shows how many people get call ups these days. I don't love fox sports articles generally but do visit the site a bit and I feel like every week they have a who is "insert new guy who has been selected".

Queensland did dominate the competition for a couple of years not that long ago so it's not surprising.

George, Khawaja and Forrest moved here from other states so it's not like they're all locals. Too many PONIs for the NSW pair and George was rightly dropped from SA when he moved.

And arguably Hartley should have gotten at least one game given his talent with the gloves.

Haha I always forget that Reardon played T20Is.
