Managed a messy, but nonetheless convincing seven wicket win against season Two Cup winners, and now semi-bots, Berserkers.
An estimated £10m of Gurs' talent sat this one out, including Greening, Staveley, Noon, Bennett, Bewers and Cash, so I suppose it was a pretty good performance given that, and now everyone will be fighting fit for a third round Cup match which promises to be closer than Andy and Roseboy are to that Piper bird in the 'Introduce
Yourself' thread!
After Berserkers won the toss and elected to bat, Resp/Feeb Bent took the new ball and bowled through, but he could only manage the one wicket for 29 in his allotted ten. Mind you, that's still one more than opening partner Resp/med Edworthy managed in his first spell. Sup/Prof Bridges M, the one true class act in either side, nipped in for a couple first change, but whilst the run rate never threatened 4.00, Berserkers held on stubbornly, reaching 93/3 after thirty.
Back-up bowlers Comp/Med Crick, and debutant Med/Woe Manzini, then took a wicket a piece, before Edworthy and Bridges M came back to polish things off for 134 after 43. Edworthy redeeming himself with 4/20 off 6.4, and Bridges M returning a tidy 8/3/18/3.
In reply Comp/Abs Wynne-Willson bought it in the first over for one, but Creasy, who has identical stats, and almost an identical wage, somehow went on to plunder 51 from 50! Prof/Resp Patel failed to cash in on the bot buffet, getting himself caught-and-bowled for 17 (14) But Resp/Woe Carey saw it home with 53*, (44). It was left to The Gurs' batting coach, and part-time batsman, Med/Feeb Kelvin Brammer, to hit the winning boundary off the last ball of the eighteenth, in his first league match for three seasons!
Pretty stinky ratings of Feeb/Woe/Wor - Med/Med/Woe, but what do you expect when you pick a team like that I suppose? At least it did the necessary job, and gave me an NRR boost of 4.51, only 1.07 worse than the team who beat them last week, with a full-strength side and ratings of Resp/Comp/Abs - Resp/Comp/Feeb.
Currently sitting second in the table with an NRR of 6.36, with another winnable game next week. I've been very fortunate in having all my easy-ish games first-up, so I've been able to rack my morale, giving me a better chance of beating the tougher teams. Apart from three teams, (My first three games) the other five in the league are very very evenly matched - So I figure that the fact that I've been beating the weaker sides, while they've been toughing it out amongst each other, might just give me the edge in close encounters.
On the Match Engine Debate, What I've noticed in my league, and from games people have posted up here, is that this season there is a much bigger margin of victory, for relatively little difference in ratings. Sides who are only one or two levels inferior (In total rather than across the board), have been getting beat by 100 runs or eight wickets, and stupid stuff like that.
Anyway, don't know if that's the same as what you guys are talking about, but it's my two penneth, for what it's worth!
Catch ya Monday, Trev
