Hi, do you guys think 200k is too much to pay for a 26yo Prof batsman? He's got Med Stam, which is good because I'm looking at him with a view to an opening spot, but only Woe Conc. Having said that, with the changes in training, I should hopefully be able to rectify that in reasonably short order. He's got wages of about twelve hundred, so with no other primary to speak of, I'm guessing he must be half way to strong?
My gut instinct is that it's a bit rich for a player of that age, but TBH the market seems pretty over-inflated in general. Last night I left work, leaving an admittedly optimistic, but, as I mistakenly thought, not an unrealistic bid of 180,000, for a 17yo middling Resp batsman with Comp Stam and Resp Conc. This morning I log on to find that he eventually went in the wee small hours for the princely sum of £428k! Far too rich for the likes of the Cymru Gurgitaters!
Also, do you think I'd get a bigger improvement in my batting by buying one high Resp/Prof batsman, or two middle-of-the-road Resps? I've got to replace at least one of the three Comps in my top order, as two of them haven't done a thing all season.
Secretly I'm quite glad that the 17yo went for as much as he did, as I'd have been really gutted to come into work to find that he'd only gone for a few grand more than my offer. All night I wanted to log on and have a look at home. However! - The thing is that yesterday I forgot to A, book the cameraman to film our wedding, and B, get food for the dog. So when I got home and 'er in doors' predictably and inevitably went spastic with me, I had to plead that I'd had so much on in work that they'd clean slipped my mind. So you see, if I'd have then declared an interest in a Battrick auction, I'd have immediately blown my cover and revealed that I had in fact been rushed off my feet all day trying to strengthen the Cymru Gurgitaters' squad!
Mind you, I wasn't too favourably disposed to my beloved after coming home from work only to have to cook my own tea! I mean, it's not on! Although inn hindsight, the correct response to "we've already eaten, do you mind getting yourself something?" wasn't necessarily, "Not at all my love! By the way, I've spent all the wages, would you mind going and getting yourself a job?"
Anyway, quickly before I go, I lost my mid-table eight-pointer on Friday, but f*ck me, what a game! West Reading scored 320/5 on a hard and fast pitch, which I didn't think was such a bad effort. However, in reply I could only manage 305/8. And I was in it almost to the end! After their one gun bowler had reduced me to 60-odd for 3, Staveley and my Comp bat WK, Carless, put on a stirring stand of 101, before Staveley was bowled for 80, (91). I thought my goose was well and truly cooked then, with Partridge the only one left who can tell the difference between a bat and a suppository, and the RR creeping up over 9, still twenty overs from home! But Carless and Partridge made a fight of it - I needed 85 off 10 with six wickets in hand, 44 off 4 - Then…Bang, Bang, Bang! - His gun bowler comes back and takes four for a gnat's fart, to finish with figures of 7/50-odd, and I only manage to scramble 28 of the required 44. But on the bright side, a welcome return to form for Partridge with 55(52) - And Man! What can you say about Carless? He's had a couple of nice cameos from No.5/7 in the past, and did once manage a century as opener against some dross last season, but he's never done anything like this, eventually perishing after one slog too many for 102 off 90!
BTW, two little quirks which I don't understand: Firstly I GFId, yet my ratings were worse than my previous league match on normal, and secondly, their gun bowler not only took a 7fer, but also scored 92 from No.4, yet Their opener, with 131 at well slower than a run a ball got MOTM?!?!?
