There seems to me that there is a concerted effort to diminish the performances of English cricketers. We've seen it with Botham, Stokes, Anderson and now Flintoff. That, plus the fact that there are those who are dismissive of early champions such as Barnes, suggests there is a certain bias among many CW members. Some would suggest it is based on an inferiority complex!

Nah, Barnes made it to the top 10 in the fast bowling ranking and lots of us had him in our top 8. Botham gets his fair share of respect. He has his critics but at point or another in these past couple of months someone has declared Gavaskar, Hayden, Lawry, Wasim, Weekes, Walcott, Greenidge and Lillee to be overrated. These are all off the top of my head and if you go further back in time you'll find people arguing against Headley, Pollock (all 3 of them), Imran and even Sobers. To counter this you have your nerds who have taken up the task of glorifying players whom they think underrated — like Goddard, Cowie, Ryan Harris etc.

Basically all of what you've mentioned has been boredom induced shitposting. The Anderson discussion is admittedly less than ideal but some of the criticisms are justified and you can't do much about Stephen and TJB.

Trundler has pretty much said it already, but I don't think there's anything malicious behind what people have been posting about England players - Flem in particular is just screwing around atm. That said, I do actually feel that quite a few notable England players reputations do exceed their stats (for various reasons) so at lot ofthe discussion is fairly justifiable, even if the thread titles I believe you have in mind don't scream "balanced analysis"

On that last sentence, I do think it's a strength of CW that people can start pretty obivous troll/shitposting threads but we end up getting good debate and interesting discussion out of it anyway. On the other hand, lots of good threads descend into absolutely dire posting at some point too...

Sadly, during my brief time here, I've witnessed too much of the latter

Reckon a big part of this is due to an outdated sarcasm/troll detector on your part tbh

.. an outdated sarcasm/troll detector on your part
Trolling is a recent (relatively speaking) occurrence that I'm not overly familiar with. As for sarcasm (defined as "the use of irony to mock or convey contempt") the intent is still to 'put-down' those targeted.

I will continue to naively accept what is posted on its face value and if that makes me look 'outdated' so be it. At my age I've been called worse.

I think the trick here L + L is to work out who is just baiting/having a laugh and who really does just have ignorant and dumb opinions. That takes time mate but if you want I can VM you a list.

The sarcasm is mostly used to rile up members who support the nation of the player targeted.

Actually I may as well just post it in case any others are struggling

TJB

In order not to attract the wrath of the mods I want say which is which......you'll have to work that out yourself.

Having said all that, it is objectively true that a lot of English players are greatly overrated, and that English members of the forum have a hard time accepting that. Even going so far as to put people who point out these uncomfortable truths in "lists" in an attempt to avoid reality.

as others have said you'll soon figure out which members are sincere in their outlandish beliefs and which are saying complete bullshit for a laugh

i don't like the term trolling anyway. i prefer the term joking. because that's basically what it is.

And this is objectively bollocks.

So who draws the line between serious discussion on cricket and "joking", "stirring" and "having a laugh"?

I appreciate those who have offered me advice, but I enjoy rational discussion about one of my favourite topics and will continue to take things on face value. I can go elsewhere if I want to engage in the other nonsense.

nothing wrong with that

It's taken Adders years to figure out sarcasm

With respect, you also need to appreciate you have joined here in unusual times. When there is cricket on we'll talk cricket, when there's not we talk ****. But there is (IMO anyway) a great sense of humour here.......and a bit of piss taking makes this an enjoyable place to visit. If your not into that then just interact with those that are here exclusively for cricket talk.........there's plenty of them.

And just avoid TJB altogether.......he can't seem to pull off either the cricket chat or the piss taking adequately.
