The WCE v Melb game today was the best game of the season so far (that I have seen). It was amazingly high quality, brilliant plays from both teams and bloody exciting. I dont understand why free to air didnt show this classic, instead choosing to show some other games noone really cared about.

I dont think I have seen such a high quality game in a long long time, every minute was a pure joy to watch.

To back up buddhs points, the scores from those two games:

1987:
Geelong 21 12 138
Hawks 21 18 144

1999:
Essendon 24.14 158
Kangaroos 20.12 132

Sorry, but high scoring games dont mean anything. Just like manyu dont think that the recent Aus SA ODI was the best ever becasue it was a batting display as opposed to an all round effort, so to high scoring games only indicate the quality of the forwards and the inadequacies of defence. To say that the best games are the high scoring ones is simply not true as one would have to assume that in those games there is a lack of tackling and overall contest. Just running from one side to the next kicking goals, oblivious of defence.

My 2 favorites / best are:

1) 1970 GF
2) 1972 GF - Although this one fits into your category of high scoring and free flowing.

In relating football to cricket you have just confirmed a couple of things for me.

I think the analogy stands. In that ODI, it was an awesome display of batting.
In the high scoring footy games listed it was an awesome display of the teams attack and their forward line.

But to be a truly amazing game, it must be of all round excellence. In cricket that means batting and bowling. That is why that ODI is not the best ever. So too in footy. The best games should have the attack and defence of both sides playing in a brilliant style, not just the forwards.

And IMO the Essendon Kangas game is way overrated. One team thrashed in the beggining and another thrashed in the end. Nothing special and I dont know why everybody always goes on about it.

Hahaha you've got the wrong game buddy. Come back to me when you know what's doing.

Underrated game from 2005 was the Doggies vs. Brisbane. That was a terrific match. It was the game Simon Black vomited on the field from running so hard, and Cooney turned it on in the last quarter after copping a huge spray from Eade.

Great match.

I'd believe you are talking about the game where Carey and Lloyd had the shootout - I think Wayne with 10 in a losing side, and Lloyd chipped in with 8. Carey kicked the sort of inside-out banana off his left, and Lloyd kicked a banana out of the air from the boundary line. Amazing game - I was there. Another game that season that was a cracker was Melb vs Essendon.

Geelong vs Essendon in '93, when Abs kicked 14 in a losing side was also an amazing game. I think the Cats only kicked 17 goals that day, too.

Okay, I thought you were on about the 2001 game and had made a mistake. My bad.

That's the first game I can remember watching as a kid.

As an aside have you got the career highlights DVD of Ablett that is floating around the net. Some guy at channel 7 put it together back in the day, unoficially of course. Over 90 minutes of Ablett magic, one highlight cut straight to the next. No other player in the AFL could put together a package as entertaining as that. He was truly a god amongst men.

Unfortunately, I don't.

Does it have vision of him running through blokes? That's the one thing about Ablett (and also with Lockett): people weren't just scared of what he could do with the football, but what he might do without the footy. It created an aura that Dunstall, the other champion full-forward of the time, didn't have.

Two of the best I've seen are the 97 Crows/Dogs prelim and the 99 Blues/Bombers prelim. Didn't see the 99 one people are talking about, I think I was overseas or something. I've seen highlights though, seemed like a pretty incredible game.
