Wellington have brought McPeake out to bat ahead of van Beek or Younghusband! Is the Southee Farewell Tour now the minimum expectation of retiring players? I'm sure his career strike rate in the low 40s will really help set up Wellington's declaration. Eeesh.

EDIT: Out for a duck from 5 deliveries.

The Plunket Shield is still on the line FFS. What diseased thinking goes on here?

Good question. Auckland should have the most competitive club scene in the country, especially given the recent interview with Abass senior about Mo needing to move down to Wellington to even get a proper run in FC cricket.
Blackcaps Instagram shared a history of Nick Kelly's career in honour of his international debut, and I had no idea he was originally Auckland based. The fact he ended up playing for northern districts, then Otago followed by wellington is kind of an indictment on Auckland cricket.

He says, like he has all the knowledge about the selection process. But if you're letting a talent from Auckland grade cricket disappear like that something's wrong.

Yeah I remember maybe 6 or 8 years ago this exact same topic - Auckland's suckyness - was up for discussion and there was talk about how a heap of younger promising players moved to Otago or ND or elsewhere as they couldn't get a look in for Auckland. Neesham was one iirc. Meanwhile the actual Auckland team at that time was mostly plodders aside from Ferguson and Munro's domestic bullying.

They maybe improved for a bit, but several years later and it looks like the same thing again - main side is underperforming while plenty of their exports are playing great for other domestic sides. With Auckland's population advantage they should honestly just never be at the bottom of the domestic table.

To be fair they said he only lived in the Auckland catchment from age 10-13. He was in ND from age 13 (lived in the Auckland region but his local club, Manukau, is part of Counties and ND).

Appropriate for Wagner to bow out with a 5-wicket haul and plenty of fire and brimstone as ND win the Plunket Shield. Hope Hazledine is OK too. Those who got bowled after him may have been a bit skittish about getting the short-ball treatment.

Somewhere I'm sure Blocky is happy ND have finally won it for the first time since 2011/12.Screenshot_20250401_144751_Instagram.jpg
