2024–25 NZ domestic season

The U19s pace bowling looks really impressive (from the available camera angle). All teams except Wellington have now appeared in a streamed match.

2 years ago, this tournament was streamed with this same camera angle at a wide(ish) long-on. And there was only one bowler who caught my eye in all of the streamed matched (Toby Hart, the rest were worse than the U17s of that same year). This year, I swear every team so far has had good pace and bounce. Not just the opening bowlers but down to first change, if not second change for some teams.

In fact, it is those U17s from 2 years ago who are now in this tournament. But it isn't just the ones from then who are capturing my attention (e.g. Mason Clarke who is not playing and Matt Rowe who isn't having a great tournament)
Better today for Rowe - 5/17. Knocked over the Wellington top order

Good confidence booster for Jamal Todd to see that through. Promising young player.

I have not started as well as I would have liked to,'' Todd told the commentary team.

''But to get a score like that definitely feels good.

''For me personally, I just try to watch the ball and I hadn't really been doing that,'' he responded when asked about his approach to chasing what was a small target.

''And as a team, it was just about batting. See ball, hit ball. If that ball is there just hit it.''

As fun hypothetical.

If I was to select an NZ U20 squad for a hypothetical U20 World Cup.
(Youth ODIs and Test used to be U20 rather than U19 up until 1998)

Based on the last year’s and this year’s national U19 tournament, Last year’s ICC World Cup, plus Provincial ‘A’ matches or NZDS matches.

It would look like this:
(To the right in italics , are the players from last year’s U19 squad who would be usurped, IMO.)
In yellow, are newcomers.

I would have selected Paranjpe last year as well anyway.
Tsourgas losing out to the (last year) injured Paul.
Sixton massively progressed one year older.

I've not given much thought at all to the spinners. So, just selected same as last year. But Ellison of Canterbury has done well both years, and Tewatiya is an option.

But ... there might be some 20 year old performing well in a difficult metropolitan club comp this season, that I don't know about. So is biased towards those still U19 this year - as the tournament is streamed and scored on NZC. Probably a bit fanciful to select a 16 year old Bogue basing a lot of this on how well he is going against U19s, when this hypolthetical would include also 20 year olds. etc etc

Also a bias towards batsmen who can keep. Rather than the specialist keepers, but we can't judge keeping from my distance.

Edit. Realise I had forgotten Stackpole. Updated my table. Van Zyl now missing out (but close between him and Jones or Bell). When TBH he's probably better and more progressed than those two, being a saffa ....

Good to see Jamal Todd make some runs, means I can once again bring up that time that I bowled a tidy over to him at indoor cricket when he was smashing everyone else
His Dad was an indoor beast, captained (?) NZ indoor side which I'm sure you know. Mongrel club player, too. Uncle Keeley played for the Aces and should have played more with his talent, and sister Anita is a Hearts squad and NZ U19 player.

Fisher gets one to nibble away and beat Fletcher's defence. Raval promptly puts two slips and a short leg in!
