Kent heading for an innings defeat even though two and half days were washed out.
I reckon Surrey's performance is even worse. Innings and 300 runs defeat is on the cards without the excuse of being skittled by England's highest ever wicket taker in helpful conditions.

Pretty epic 37* (278) from Amla in the end
Yeah, we taught him everything he knows during his time at The Oval ....
But kudos to Amla for doing that instead of getting out quickly enough to go and watch the tennis.

Anyway, Kent and Surrey both drawing to confound the dire predictions from LT and myself.

We just survived, thanks to rain.

Watched most of Amla's innings on the stream last night, magnificent rearguard effort, only for the purist, LIKE ME, but the application was amazing, good help by all the others sticking around.
37no (278) out of 122-8 off 104.5 overs.
A deserved draw, could easily cost Hampshire missing the win to Qualify for the top group with just one match left.

Kent Sussex has a real feel of a 2nd xi game. Kent have a whole side out isolating. Sussex had a load last week (some of which are back) isolating and have a threadbare squad as it is.

the Kent bowling attack must be the youngest ever? Amazing to have a game with so many players out.

They did well didn't they? Even though they subsequently struggled with the bat.

I was at The Oval yesterday, arriving just in time to see Ashwin open the bowling for Surrey against Somerset. Surprisingly, Conway only made 21, but a fine century from Hildreth made sure that Somerset probably have enough in their first innings. He looked very comfortable, and knew far too much for Surrey's young spinners Virdi and Moriarty. Presumably the pitch will turn much more as the match goes on, so Leach is probably looking forward to turning his arm.

Ugh. Derbyshire vs. Essex abandoned due to a positive covid test in the Derbys squad. I presume that's Essex's Championship defence over as a result of that.

I see Harry Houillon hasn't even played 2nd XI cricket since 2019.
I've tried googling him as cricinfo doesn't even know his DOB. There is a Harry Houillin born in 1970 mentioned on the wisdon website, and another who seems to be at Cambridge university who won some economics prize. I suspect its the younger if he was keeping wicket - nice story for him when discussing what he did over the summer!

It's a bit concerning when you see that stat and automatically assume the current England wicketkeeper must be behind the stumps.
Someone sayings it's the joint most amount of byes ever, no idea whether that's BS. In the end, let's face it I would be surprised, massively, if Bracey ever plays for England again, would need a much worse pandemic to be blunt.

Dom Leech's injury causes the Roses match to be called off for now for a bad outfield. Better news for another Leach, 5fer against Surrey, for what that's worth. Somerset guaranteed Division 1 cricket.

Could you have a more Scottish name than Alistair Graham Hamilton Orr, born in Sussex obviouly.

I think we can assume that the Oval wicket is taking some spin today, with Ashwin and Moriarty reducing Somerset to 44 for 5. Leach is going to enjoy himself this afternoon.

Nothing for the spinners on the first 2 days then suddenly Leach and vd Merwe have take all 10 and then Moriarty and Ashwin do the same. Surrey's batted well enough to draw in any case.

Wonder if there'll be a pitch inspection, Hildy probably saved a points deduction for surrey.

Surrey's 240 first time up wasn't great, but it was way more than they'd have made if the pitch was unplayable. It all looked pretty comfortable when I was there on Day 1, and our habitual inability to shift your lower order on Day 2 suggests that our spinners weren't getting a lot of turn then either. Even today, your 69ao looks like an aberration given how comfortably we batted out the draw. Helps having Ashwin of course.

I'd actually quite like us to prepare a sandpit for one of our matches just for the sake of it. I reckon the points deduction would be a price worth paying.

Turns out that Ashwin is only playing this one game for Surrey. Honestly, what on earth was the point? I hope we do get fined for the pitch as a matter of principle. My other thought is why did Somerset agree to call it a draw at 5.00pm? Given the state of our batting, losing a clutch of wickets in the last 15 overs or so wasn't beyond the realms of possibility. Maybe they wanted to head back down the A303 as soon as possible, but it just strikes me as odd, unless Somerset already have enough points to progress into the next stage of this year's competition.
