2015 World Cup: 10 teams and no associates

Yes this sounds fair, like GeraintIsMyHero said every game should matter. Having 2 groups of 6-7 teams would allow test nations to take a day or two off which goes against your "every match should be exciting" logic.
my logic wasn't "every match should be exciting". My logic was - give all the teams a bit of room in the early stages - only the teams which can put up consistently good performances should go through to the next round. We want only the teams who can compete real well in the business end of the tournament , right ?

If minnows aren't allowed to partake in the WC against stronger competition, how can they make progress at the top level? If India weren't allowed to play in the 75 and 79 WC would they have won the 83 tournament since they only won 1 match in 6 games before 83. What about Sri Lanka excluded from all WC until 96 as they had only won 4 and lost 20 matches, would they have won 96?
when did I say minnows shouldn't be allowed to partake in the WC ? In which world does splitting 12 teams into 6 each instead of 4 each lead to minnows not being allowed to take part against stronger competition ?

BTW, does anyone think the format used for the T20 WC would work? Maybe with 16 teams a la 07 instead of 12 but the same from there?
you mean the format where one loss for SAF meant they didn't reach the semis, but Australia with 2 losses did ? Mind you there were no KO matches before the semis !

I think everybody should be made to qualify like in Football WCs. What if a top 8 team at the start of the qualification rounds completely loses form and performs terribly by the time the WC comes around? Or at least make it automatic entry for only the top 4-5 or something.
The problem with that is that unlike soccer the gap between the best and the rest is too big for qualifiers to prove of any value, even the last two bottom ranked full-member sides would beat most of the associates with ease but that's not the point here.

The ICC is kidding itself if it thinks that cricket can survive as a global sport by being popular in just a few nations, they had put in a lot of time to spread the game across other countries but this decision of their's truly has undone any work done in that direction.

They have shut the door on the faces of some very promising associate nations and all this would do is make the aspiring cricketers in these countries loose interest in the sport.

Anyways.. hasn't ICC already scrapped Champions trophy as a tournament, if so then maybe that has something to do with this decision.

Reply from the ECB:

Dear Katherine

Thank you for your email and your comments re the 2015 Cricket World Cup

ECB has been a strong advocate of meritocracy in the qualification process for the ICC Cricket World Cup. ECB supports the decision to manage the volume of cricket by reducing the number of global events to one in each format of the game in a 4 year period.

A qualification period for a 10-team World Cup, which is by far the best format for this event, needs to commence in 2013 and 2014 and ECB will fully support its introduction at the earliest possible stage.

With best wishes

Reply from the ECB:
I got an identical response (apart from the "Dear Katherine" bit, which would have been a bit strange). It seems the decision isn't as final as it's been portrayed, so let's hope more people voice their opposition.

Does anyone have an email address for Ireland cricket? I was hoping to forward it onto them, but the 'contact us' form on their website doesn't work.

Edit: Ignore that, it does work. And within 2 mins I have had a reply from someone at cricket Ireland saying that's silly because the ECB voted against the qualification process, and can I forward them the email.

Hey 4OR6, what was your original email to the person at ECB?, just people over at an Irish Cricket Forum were wondering :), if you don't mind of course :)...

Lol, I think I better not post it in full, I was a bit outraged. Basically I said that I was unhappy that the ECB were involved in removing the opportunity for associates to be in the world cup, that it's therefore not a 'world cup', and so I'd not see the point of following 50-over cricket any more. That I didn't see the point of watching domestic list A cricket any more, and I'd rather watch the IPL, domestic T20, and the T20 world cup.

Anyhow, it seems to be a generic reply from the ECB that they've sent out to anyone who emailed them.

I got the same email as fos

My original email, FTR:

Hi,
I am writing to express my disgust at the decision to remove associates from the next World Cup. This is shallow elitism. Did the ECB vote for this decision? I will refuse to spend any money supporting the England team anymore if I find that to be the case. I have not yet come across a cricket fan who thinks this is a good decision.
You should be ashamed of yourselves for letting this happen. JOKE.
Thanks

Well done and thank you, four_or_six, GeraintIsMyHero and all others who sent protests to the ECB.

Since these boards might now be beginning to feel ashamed of what they have done:

All Indian fans who resent this decision, please express your disgust by writing to BCCI. bcci@vsnl.com

Ditto, Australian fans. Cricket Australia > Contact Us

Let's do all that we can to get this reversed.

Check the petition (sig), apparently the ICC contacted Tim about it as well.
