Why let something as trivial as facts get in the way!tooextracool said:strange though that he averages more than jayasuriya
Well Jayasuriya was batting at number 7,8,9, position for most of his carrier as a pinch hitter untill 1996 when he was promoted to open by ranatunga. Thats when he was expected to perform as a batsman.tooextracool said:strange though that he averages more than jayasuriya
no they dont, which is why i decided to look at his average from 96 onwards, which is still 36.10, and 0.42 less than trescos.Legglancer said:Well Jayasuriya was batting at number 7,8,9, position for most of his carrier as a pinch hitter untill 1996 when he was promoted to open by ranatunga. So overall averages dont tell the whole story !
That'll be why Trescothick averages just shy of 40 whilst Jayasuriya is a touch over 30 then.Legglancer said:Suit Yourself .... Trsco is not good enough to be sanaths left toe !

Precisely - I admit I am taking the proverbial out of the Aussies over these 2 games this week, but I know that come the Oval we'll be looking at another defeat.tooextracool said:doubt it, because neither one of us have predicted anything other than an aussie victory.
Keep digging - he's batted 325 times in ODIs, opening on 279 occasions.Legglancer said:Well Jayasuriya was batting at number 7,8,9, position for most of his carrier as a pinch hitter untill 1996 when he was promoted to open by ranatunga. Thats when he was expected to perform as a batsman.

his average from 1996 onwards if 36.10 wich is not that much less than marcus, but sanath scored at a much higher strike rate when he was in his prime. Also Jayasuriya Originated and reinvented ODI batting strategy, of course with Arjuna's brains .... but only jayasuriya could have executed it that well.marc71178 said:Keep digging - he's batted 325 times in ODIs, opening on 279 occasions.

Read the previous posts and try answering again .... pointless going over the same suff that has been disproved !marc71178 said:For a start, I only ever said as a batsman, but lets look at the numbers then:
Avg - SJ 31.90, MT 37.56 (OK, I admit the 40 was what he was last time I checked, but it's still a clear 5+runs)
S/R - SJ 88.57, MT 86.43
Tons - SJ 18 in 325, MT 9 in 99
50+ - SJ 75 in 325, MT 28 in 99
Add in that Trescothick averages more against all Test sides bar NZ and Bangladesh - and in most cases it's significantly more (look at Australia for an example).
Disproved = ignored with own selective stats thrown up as a smokescreen?Legglancer said:Read the previous posts and try answering again .... pointless going over the same suff that has been disproved !
Comprehension, comprehension my friend !
Admittedly JS was a ground breaking batsman 10 years ago, who had some great success....Legglancer said:Suit Yourself .... Trsco is not good enough to be sanaths left toe !

However, I dont think there is much doubt that Trescothick performs more consistantly now...I think a fair indication of how the two have played are the records over the last 3 years (excluding B'desh games).
Trescothick averages 38.1 over the last 3 years(59 matches,2134 runs, 6 x 100's, 12 x 50's)...Jaya a shade under 34 (73 matches,2343 runs, 6 x 100's, 8 x 50's)...I would say the respective strike rates are about equal, maybe just in favour of Jaya.
But Trescothick plays more of his cricket in England which is undoubtedly a lower scoring environment than Asia, so that puts Trescothicks acheivements into a better light.
since the World Cup, Jaya has done very little.
Swervy .... I appreciate your well thought comment. Its a breath of fresh air compered to some others here.
And have to agree that Sanath has been in in decline for sometime. I can see your point that Tresco might get the nod ahead of sanath these days, but why dont you look at sanath the "all rounder". Who would you say is the better bowler and fielder out of the 2 ?

Here's a question ..... what records do you think we can expect from Tresco in the future???marc71178 said:Exactly - Jayasuriya is based a lot on past glories and overhyping.
