I voted MOrrison without looking at the stats, as he always looked the better bowler to me.
But his stats are worse than I imagined, whilst Martin's are way better.
But again, if we judged solely on stats, then Jacques Kallis is the greatest player ever, so Ill stick with my original...
Sorry, I badly worded my last post.
20 years ago, the selectors would have labelled Dhoni, Akmal and Prior as batsmen, regardless of their keeping ability, and would have chosen a better keeper ahead of them, just for the sake of having the best keeper, even if the other guy couldnt bat. I didnt...
Very good point. Wicketkeepers who were great batsmen used to be the exception. Now, no international side would dare pick a weak batsman behind the stumps. Although many overlook what a brilliant keeper Gilchrist was, and think they just need to pick somoen who can bat.
Would Dhoni, Matt Prior...
The most influential man in English cricket history may be Tom Cartwright.
He was the man who withdrew from the England squad to South Africa, and was replaced by D'Oliveira. And suddenly history changed.
Also, he was doing some coaching at Somerset when he came across a young all rounder...
Two pieces of good news!!!
Although great a signing as Mendis is, I wish Somerset would stop signing overseas spinners. Taunton isnt really a spinners wicket anyway, plus they have talented young spinners in Max Waller and George Dockrell. They should really have signed an overseas batsman for...
NZ are worth watching in ODIs. They might collpase to 120 all out, or then they might chase down 350 wih ease. But they arent worth watching in tests. Even Bangladesh are more fun to watch in tests than NZ. Well done to NZ for getting some draws against India, but it was hardly riveting stuff.
Mainly because nobody ever owned a batsman like Alderman owned Gooch. Gooch, one of the best in the world, was reduced to a wreck, totally unable to play a shot against Alderman. A year later he scored 333 against India.
Alderman was not quick, not flashy, no reverse swing. He just destroyed...
Much as I hate Aussies, I went for 1987.
Just months earlier, Australia had been blown away by a mediocre England side, as MIke Gatting's side retained the Ashes in Australia.
As the World Cup approached, everybody expected one of the home sides, either India or Pakistan to win.
Revenge was...
20 names off the top of my head. And I stick by every single one of them. Im not going to justify each one individually, or we will be here for a very long time. But in my opinion, they were all better bowlers than Imran, great though he was.
thinking about it, I would add Spofforth, Barnes...
20 guys ahead of Imran as a bowler , off the top of my head:
Hadlee, Marshall, Holding, Ambrose, Walsh, Garner, Croft, Roberts, Wasim, Waqar, Lillee, Thomson, Miller, Alderman, McGrath, Donald, Pollock, Trueman, Botham, Larwood,
Interesting the one name that rarely gets mentioned, and personally Im not sure about him, but if you judge solely on career stats, rather than impact, Jacques Kallis should be in there.
I guess its a lesson never to rely solely on stats, as personally I wouldnt place him in the top 30.
Greatest all rounder is Sobers. Imran is in a contest for 2nd place with Botham, Hadlee, Kapil Dev and Mike Proctor.
Greatest fast bowler? Theres 20 names safely ahead of Imran, including 2 from Pakistan.
Winning one world cup against an England team that declined throughout the tournament does...
Grace misses out because his best cricket was in the 19th century!
If you counted 19th century cricket, then he's in without a doubt, as without him, cricket would never have been anything more than a minority sport.
I think its because if you only count this century, or only count last century, Tendulkar and Gilchrist wouldnt be in contention. By counting both centuries, we can consider their overall record properly! Still dont think theyve quite done enough, although Tendulkar has established himself as...
Tendulkar is VERY close. Maybe if he guides India to World Cup victory, it will push him into the 5 at the expense of Sobers.
Imran I just cant see. Great player (and leader) though he was, he is nowhere near the top 5 of the century.
