How did they ever lose a Test?

Yeah, sorry - I approached it with the assumption that we were essentially talking about the period where the Ambrose and Walsh pairing was finishing up. It occurred to me later that the intances were likely interrupted, but I couldn't be arsed going through them all to check. It doesn't...

    Top Ten Ashes Sledges

Yeah, the truth of the matter is that around 70% of the "great sledges" we hear about will be apocryphal. At least we know the Sarwan/McGrath one was real, just from the reactions... Most of the time what's said out there isn't that clever when it's told later on in third-person. I still...

***Official*** 1st Test at The Gabba

Most excited I've been since Balboa's streetfight with Tommy Gunn in Rocky V.

    CW awards 12-19 Nov

Woohoo, somebody up there likes me. Cheers, fellas. :)

    What was he thinking?

Yeah, very interesting - this is a good lesson in how history gets written, in a lot of ways. From my recall, the issue here was that the English touring party had been talking a lot about getting on the front foot and taking the initiative - putting runs on the board and subjecting the Aussie...

    3-1 or 1-3

Yes, I would be completely in favor of Australia switching to the more universal method of runs/wickets. Much less confusing. And a good catch from Brumby. England really needs to move away from this 51st state nonsense, get with the EU program and start using metrics. :)

How did they ever lose a Test?

I think my problem with the question is that it's a bit of a straw man, and there are some unclarified assertions. Do many people genuinely consider Chanders to be a great? I would think not many at all (in fact, who here does?). So immediately, the question should be revised to three greats...

    Prediction Thread

To be honest, I hope they don't, because I'd much rather see an exciting series than a walkover. The conservative pick is probably 3-1, but I think 3-zip is a genuine possibility. FWIW, I picked 2-1 (Aus) last Ashes, but I was fairly nervous from the outset. It feels quite different this...

***Official*** 1st Test at The Gabba

It'd be too out of the box, I think - if they really want to persevere with an all rounder, I'm sure that Symonds would be the pick. I just thought they'd be more likely to take Clarke and Clark if the initial plan was disrupted. Martyn should be OK - I think he was just left out of this one...

***Official*** 1st Test at The Gabba

Holy crap! I just saw that, was watching with the sound down. You don't think they'll go for Clarke? Apparently Marto's got some tendonitis as well.

    Ashes Avatar Challenge

You find that unappealing? To be fair though, the consequence of somebody's challenge was that they'd wear Burkey's old school pic, which is probably a bit more disturbing, IMO.

    ICC ranks Hair second best

Agreed - well, kind of. This thread is in cricket chat, and for the last page or so it has had NOTHING to do with cricket. If the thread was in off-topic I wouldn't give a stuff, but IMO the moderators should step in and request (or insist) that the thread get back on topic when this occurs...

    Ashes Avatar Challenge

If England win a test, I'll wear Punter's visage for a month. For those risking having Watson as an avatar, I'd like to submit this one:

    Prediction Thread

^ with the exception of the '03 India series, heh heh... But even then, when I felt we were dominated, they only walked away with one test. It's just been very hard for the opposition to win tests in Australia for quite some time now.
  15. Slow Love™

    Prediction Thread

It's not that crazy. I think since the 96/97 series against WI (almost ten years), Australia have only lost around 3 tests in total in our own backyard. Granted, a couple of those were to England, but we have been near impregnable at home in recent seasons, much more so than in the 90's...

    Warne in the Ashes

I thought about each option - I can't see him having "little effect", and I've rarely been able to discern much from his domestic form, which he appears to treat fairly casually. The Englishmen will likely seek to play him cautiously and neutralise him - I don't think they'll be looking to get...

***Official*** 1st Test at The Gabba

Hodge's international career is possibly over, with Hussey coming in so strong and Jaques now being the frontrunner knocking on the door. I'd be surprised to see Tait play, I think it'll be out of Johnson and Clark. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Clark play, in case the Poms really are...

Graeme Smith warns Panesar of racist abuse

Yeah, I made that crack earlier (about the SMS thing), but apparently all it's supposed to result in initially is having some surveillance target the area concerned, rather than dragging some guy off 'cause someone sent a prank SMS about him. As to the attention-getting, it might happen, though...

Graeme Smith warns Panesar of racist abuse

If you read through the thread, you will see that Cricket Australia have introduced tough new measures to deal with this kind of behaviour, including improved CCTV surveillance, use of SMS for the purposes of members of the crowd to report abusive behaviour, and spectators indulging in this...

    ICC ranks Hair second best

He's fulfilled his dream. I have to laugh at this, it's a classic. It's a good effort by his fans amongst the Wisden Cricketer readership. Fair enough though - if I thought Hair was decent, I'd lodge a protest vote, too. I suppose there might be a bit of an anti-Asian bloc sentiment as well...
