”This attack” doesn’t have three seamers in it, and given the Kohli/Shastri selection track record, picking two spinners on a green top isn’t unprecedented. No argument that the England series was more competitive than the scoreline indicated but it doesn’t do anything to undermine the point...

You mean with two seamers? Or in the 4-1 defeat in England this summer?

That’s not half as long as their history of getting shot out on them though. Regardless, Australia need the result, and better to have a surface where there’s more chance of a win even if there’s also more chance of a defeat. All there seems like a chance of today is Josh Hazlewood’s knees...

Nah, declaration will come mid-evening session or out of necessity to protect Shami and Bumrah. I expect they’ll want to get at some exhausted opening batsmen before stumps.

Worth a random over from Travis Head rather than serving up another six balls of whatever that’s meant to be from Labuschagne?

Anyway, a couple of years ago Bangladesh contrived to lose in Wellington having posted 595/8 in the first innings. Here’s the Hall of Shame: 500+ has managed to lose 15 Test matches, and I’ve just been reminded of Adelaide 2006.

First innings or first/second innings? England made a habit of making 400+ and then managing to lose by an innings in India last winter.

Interesting reading the chat about Australia’s bowling plans, and lengths in particular, and contrasting it to England over the last decade. Anderson and Broad have, very often, bowled a yard shorter than supporters in general seem to have wanted them to do, particularly when the ball hasn’t...

... or he could have nicked off in a summer where the batting was trial by fire, been left out of this series and India might have recalled Wasim Jaffer. Unlikely, but playing what-if goes both ways...!

I would think they might call time during the evening session if they’re on 550+ and down to the bowlers, as was the case at the MCG. No point asking Bumrah to bat for the sake of outside edge for 4 at the risk of one of the two seamers getting pinned.

You don’t get many ten-year-olds who keep coming back for more when you keep pinning them, though.
