Just await the defeat - hope Pujara and Rahane get canned and then recover accordingly.

Useful but without Thakur then we scored 120.

The batting would be too **** whatever we do - just gotta await the two defeats here.

Ha - not at all. I just think it was worth a punt. But this is men vs boys. This is just 2014 and 2018 rolled into one. I hate so much that India can never win or draw a Test series in England all the way since 2007. So depressing.

More ammunition for our idiotic captain to blame the bowlers.

I think we just gotta concede to the better team here. It is always fun to talk strategy and selection but the fact is that Ashwin in for Umesh and he needs to make up three first-innings wickets (of the first six) and in for Thakur and he needs to make a 50. And similarly regarding length -...

Test-quality batsmen (of which we have 2) are tough to get out or keep quiet on a flat pitch.

Yes - I think this one is game over without some sort of freak occurrence like a Pant counterattack hundred or a Bumrah 50.

You are right but it wouldn't make any difference here because the six batsmen that we do play are just not fit for purpose. An extra one isn't going to make much of a difference, especially when it would be at the expense of someone like Thakur who managed to score runs.

Pope and Bairstow have solidified the case for India bringing the likes of Shaw, Agarwal or SKY into the side - batsmen who can score at a good rate and put on pressure rather than just taking the punches, Pujara and Rahane style.

Pope and Bairstow have shown that 190 a/o is unacceptable on this pitch, especially with intermittent sunny spells. India need to be bold next Test and understand that Pujara and Rahane are just not good enough.

Honestly - we just need some swing. Without swing, Thakur is like a part-timer.

We're not swimming in people who can score more runs than Thakur and Jadeja.

Very demoralising session but truth be told, this is a flat pitch so India don't really have much that they can do other than perhaps wait for an unforced error. I think India will do very well to keep England beneath 250 and I think England are very capable of turning this one into a 300+.

I think whatever one's view - it would be truly mad to give him just one opportunity to bat five. Gotta give him at least one more.

And as much as I would love to say India are the most abysmal batting around, it does feel a global problem in Test batting where the quality is just much lower than before.

If Malan was out instead of Root then England massively ahead but yes, I would agree evenly poised. England's game to lose considering unlikely to be much clouds tomorrow and it is a flat pitch which will likely get flatter and they bat very deep.

Pant looks completely shot out there. He seems totally lost in these conditions.

India need to make a plan to get Pujara some runs and confidence also. Get him some time away from the Test team and into his Ranji team, for example.
