    Greatest ODI Bowler

You can’t compare 2 players in a team sport without team context. This isn’t the long jump

    CW's Ranking of Batsmen (Tests)

Can we please say batter and not batsman? Thank you

    Wasim Akram vs Allan Donald

Akram better. Stats without context are meaningless. Worse fielding side, skillset tailored to asian wickets/playing on flat tracks vs pitces that look like lawns in SAF, worse batting unit (need to bowl defensively / contain) etc. This isn't a 100m dash where all else is equal and you just...

Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

you cannot compare spin and fast bowling figures. Spin bowlers can bowl twice as much because their action wastes less energy. This is like second grade cricket knowledge. Ashwin has been great away since 2015 not his fault Kohli (who is should be sacked as captain) is jealous of him and...

Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

Ah someone who doesn’t understand cricket and thinks a team sport is about optimizing stats out of context. Enjoy your 25 averaging pacer who gets tired in 20 overs vs my 28 averaging spinner who bowls 45 overs on the trot. next guy will say batsmen are better than wicketkeepers! Spreadsheet expert

Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

people on this site can’t separate individual stats from team context in a team sport it’s truly baffling

Would Shane Warne had averaged 25 had he faced his own attack??

If he were from a subcontinent team then yes he'd have more or less murali's figures because of how much spin benefits from conditions. If he played for like NZ or Eng then he would average 27-28 (as evidenced by his average excl. McGrath i.e. another ATG ont he team).

    How to think about longevity

Thinking about tennis (or golf, or nba/nfl etc.) where all anyone cares about are grand slams, championship rings etc. got me thinking about longevity and how to value it. People don't really care about match win % or tournament win %. It's about the aggregate tally. Lets ignore the pre 70s days...

Choose your 3 man pace attack in Tests (post 1970)

The correct answer (ignoring batting prowess) is Marshall, Akram, and one of McGrath or Ambrose. Would be an unstoppable attack with left arm/right balance, the ability to move the old and new ball and taking wickets in a multitude of ways (accuracy, sheer pace, bounce, swing, seam etc.)

Finding out the best decade for test cricket: The tournament thread! 12 ATG XIs duke it out.

this is a misunderstanding of how cricket is played. You don’t just take some guy’s stats and apply them without team context. In a team of 3 atg fast bowlers warne would be dangerously effective because you could use him exactly when he is most impactful I.e. middle overs and day 4/5. 3 atg...

Finding out the best decade for test cricket: The tournament thread! 12 ATG XIs duke it out.

to be crystal clear, this exercise is comparing records in a decade and so longevity and all that stuff doesn’t matter. You need to look at the stats and performances in a particular decade. So arguments around retirement timing are moot. The 80s team lacks a spinner and yes the windies showed...

agreed. The 90s side was / is the best and should have won.

Finding out the best decade for test cricket: The tournament thread! 12 ATG XIs duke it out.

The 90s team is the best and it doesn’t even have its best possible team. Dravid in for de silva (averaged 50 ~3k runs)

Suggestions for top 30 bowlers countdown

Fundamentally, cricket is a team (and conditions) dependant sport. Any analysis comparing two players is going to be flawed. Here are some facts: - Most players are suited to their home conditions but some especially conditions dependant disciplines are benefitted more than others (spin in...

Suggestions for top 30 bowlers countdown

Murali can bowl more partly because he is a spin bowler who doesn't need a run up. That is a feature of spin bowling that allows a higher WPI. How do you factor that in?

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current) - Updated

doesn’t make sense. A spin bowler’s action doesn’t expend energy and so they typically bowl a lot more per match. So even with a slightly higher average they can take more wickets. You can’t compare the two. Who is worth more a bowler with 22 avg and 50 strike rate who gets tired in 25 overs or...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current) - Updated

The low margin is only due to longevity penalty which implicitly bakes in some form slump. I.e. Smith's form would have to TANK in order for him to go to #2. I think another couple years and smith for me is #1 (and #2 after bradman)
