O'Rourke can stick around though, he's no Martin in that respect. Just can't seem to get it off the square.

I'd say there's more than a little bit of life in the pitch. Plenty of seam movement on offer, even later in the day. Having said that, the surface is relatively slow, quite a few edges ended up falling short of the slips, and anything short just sat-up and screamed hit me. England bowled short...

Young has been tried as an opener. He averages 22. He's a number 4. Maybe a number 3 if you're pushing it. He's not an opener. Swapping Latham with Young and Blundell with Latham just means you've got a worse opener and worse keeper.

Shame that Robinson couldn't get through to his hundred. Looks like an outstanding lone hand in tricky conditions.

England's bowlers might need to ask to borrow GP's crampons after lunch.

Yep it synchs up perfect. Definitely a little touch.

Swings plenty at Christchurch. Boult always got plenty of hoop.

Going to be much better weather for bowling tomorrow and day 3. Overcast and cool.

    Carse is quick enough at 135 - low 140's. That's Bumrah/Cummins pace.

Rachin lurches forward to play a hard handed cover drive firat ball. Not banking on him making any runs here. Lot of pressure on KW to make a score.

First time seeing Carse. Looks like he should be sharing a county gaol cell with his captain.

He always does right up until he doesn't.

Hagley's pretty much always a bowl first pitch because with all the grass it doesn't break up, and instead just gradually eases in pace.

NZ = Parker - good fundamentals and plans but a bit too small and lacking in fire power, and easily demoralized England = Dubois - looks utterly monstrous on a good day, but can be made to look a bit silly by anyone who knows what they're doing.

England win the toss and bowl. Excited to see how England's bowlers look with the Kookaduke.

Lyon got a couple to rip on day 3 of last year's test to help keep Australia's chase to under 300, but then again he's forgotten more than Bashir will ever know about how to bowl on pitches that are bad for spinners.

It's hard to know how to feel about this England team. They swing so wildly from the comic to the sublime. Scoring 800 in 150 overs is terrifying, but then at the same time they got skittled for 150 in good batting conditions by SL, and surrendered a dominant position v India after Joe Root...
