it’s a fair point. As players though having seen prime Gooch and Gilchrist’s entire career, I don’t think there’s a lot to debate here.
You could also argue that Gooch had a 20 year career, whereas Gilchrist was picked in his prime and only played for 8 years, batted down at 7 behind the best batting lineup ever rather than opening for a brittle lineup.

And played in a much tougher batting era, and had rougher home conditions.
