Wagner played most of his early career under McCullum when we all wanted him dropped though. By the time the transition came, his average was rapidly dropping and he was a secure member of the team.

Nothing summarises the impact of McCullum better than Wagner. Yes, we had Boult and Southee and a collection of batsmen capable of averaging over 35 for a change. But Wagner would've been discarded in every other era of NZ cricket.

Vettori strikes me as a guy who might be good as a bowling coach, but bad as a head coach.

yeah blundell doing bad in spin conditions is *suprised pikachu face*, can't read into it too much

I want to believe in Ashok but the conversion rate for quickish, googly dependent leggies transferring to tests isn't great. NZ domestic batsmen just aren't picking him imo. We need to invest in specialist finger spin, and we need to do it yesterday.

wild take - maybe he finally came to his senses and realised being a NZ test spinner just aint worth it

Not 100% if it was Malan but I remember Kyle saying it was as simple as telling him to run in harder and act like a fast bowler - he'd spent so many years as a plodding medium pacer he wasn't aware of the pace he was capable of.

maybe he's actually called Bruce and he's throwing us off the scent

I sure hope he uses someone who needs to perform for longer than 9.58 seconds as a role model

AI is like a boob job - when it's good you probably don't notice it. When it's bad, it's laughably bad.

given his biggest weakness in T20 at the moment is test quality bowlers he could get a lot out of a bit of red ball cricket even if he has no intention of playing tests imo I want to reiterate that I'm not an anti-t20 dinosaur (sorry Steve) but I reckon over the next while we might see players...

yeah I'm not casting any aspersions as to his character, I just don't think leagues are going to have much patience with him if he doesn't deliver quickly. Which makes this a pretty big risk.

Here's how I hope it will play out. Finn spends a couple of years in the franchise circuit averaging low 20s. Fails to pick up an IPL gig. Starts to realise he's a little fish and big pond and goes through some soul searching and maturing. Comes back to NZ and plays a couple of seasons of red...

I don't think you need to get all caught up in honour and philosophy to argue against what he's doing here. Even if his sole goal is to maximise income with no care for anything else he's pulling the trigger on internationals too early here.

England paid West Indies a touring fee this year. They already know they're in the **** because home tests between smaller nations and the big 3 are never competitive because test cricket isn't financially viable for anyone else, which is finally starting to hit the big boys in the wallet. It's...

RE Finn... I totally get that it's his destiny to be a T20 hired gun, but I think this is a bit overconfident. He's not the finished product and he hasn't yet dominated a season in any respectable league outside the super smash (I watched some of big MLC innings and he was slashing it over third...

gonna add this to my list of advanced stats to check. When a left arm seamer is on a roll, what is the expected return on a third over compared to holding them back for later?

Kane at 3 steadying the ship feels like a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy because it puts all the pressure on his partner to hit out. He has a career strike rate of about 104 in the powerplay which isn't enough even for an anchor. Now watch him save us with 70 off 50
