*Official* 2024 South Africa tour of New Zealand: 2 tests

*Official* Australia tour of New Zealand Feb-Mar 2024

Australia are absolutely a better side, no argument. The average margin of defeat is absolutely not reflective of the skill gap though - we should have at least competed in the last tour.

Ashok is a wrong-un dependent wristspinner who doesn't really give it a rip - he could be the exception but they don't tend to convert well into test cricket. obvs good hope for white ball, similar to Sodhi but with a more repeatable action

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Random thought I had a couple of weeks ago which I need to get out - Why doesn't Ben Lister bowl around the wicket more? The left arm angle in with his movement away combined with the occasional nip-backer brings every mode of dismissal into play.

The older I get the more I think this is actually the correct approach. Age group cricket is essentially just a competition to see who hit puberty first otherwise. You want to give guys a go and try to separate their innate talents from age based physical advantage which can be caught up on.

I'd be interested to see a proper study into the correlation between U19 performance and future international success. Most players don't hit their physical peak until 23/24 so it must be fairly loose for countries with smaller talent pools (although obvs our Golden Generation goes against this...

Height and long limbs aren't an advantage in wrestling, the best guys and gals are stubby and barrel-chested.

Height vs pace: which is more important for pace bowler success?

cricket is a sport that does almost everything non-optimally for arbitrary reasons. Adding this to that list is not a stretch.

The past decade was built on home dominance and wrangling a few excellent results in the SC. You're right that fast bowlers aren't essential to that. However, what every NZ fan truly craves is victories in Australia and SA which you're not going to get without taking a punt on some fast bowlers.

Height vs pace: which is more important for pace bowler success?

Speed guns are not reliable, they've semi-openly admitted they rig them in response to the state of play src: in Ross Taylors bio he talks about chatting with a guy in broadcasting who showed him how they get an estimated speed range and pick a speed out of that range out from vibes

Height vs pace: which is more important for pace bowler success?

I'd bet that TH cares more about height than almost any cricket journalist

Starting slowly when you've lost 3 wickets in the powerplay is fine. The issue with Kane is he often does it when we're 1 down.

Yeah I love sodhi as a bloke but ever since he fell to pieces in the T20 WC final that time in spinning conditions it's been hard to shake the feeling that he never stands up in big moments. I don't think it's mental either - he simply doesn't put enough fizz on the ball.

Hot take but I think his job is to get 30 or 40 off 20 and then hit one straight up. He's just not that good at playing pace off with the field out, and he doesn't need to be - that's the job of Phillips, Mitchell, and Chapman. It's kinda stupid for him to pace his innings assuming no-one else...
