  • Hey Martin,
I was writing a piece on my personal blog to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Archie Jackson's passing and came across your article on CricketWeb. Thought you might be interested to know that there is a small clip of him batting online. Skip to about 3.43 here: Old Cricket Film: 1928-29 - YouTube. The full Percy Fender video seems to be about 21 minutes but frustratingly I can't find it anywhere.
    Cheers,
    David
Thanks I'll put it in the mix. Going to go for Newbolts, Play up, and the cricket poem that Pinter had said at his funeral. without the Lanky bits of course. Should be enough to put a half-coherent thing together. He actually took my mum to Lords to watch South Africa and Compton on their Honeymoon, that will get a mention. Tayfield and Adcock, what more could a young bride want.
Thanks, my broadband has been dodgy for much of the day, which is why I got to you a bit late, think it's sorted now.

fingers-crossed, TBH, if there's any little extras, I'm sure I could phone or e-mail him, the funeral is next Tuesday.
    thanks

well we're seeing the bloke tonight about 7ish. We've already got the general gist as I say, just want some literary stuff to flesh it out really. It's not a religious bloke doing it, and he apparently will say pretty much what we want. If it's too short notice don't worry about it.
    Hey Fred

My Dad has just passed on. He wasn't very religious, or particularly lovely, but we're thinking of making the speech by the clerical bloke, more about his youth, growing up in the depression, then war, then his love of cricket (and football) afterwards, the dark days being replaced by light. He was a massive Denis Compton fan, he was happy to see his grandson play tests. Was wandering if you could think of any appropriate passages read at his funeral, relating to cricket. Think the CLR James quote may get an airing.

    If not, no pressure

    Pete
Cheers for that - was hoping you'd say closer to 25, I'll have to make my dream touring squad with 17 now. Just something I've been wanting to write up for a while. Thanks again!
Tangy, got a general cricket question for you. Would you happen to know what the typical size of a touring squad would be back in the 1930's-1950's when they used to take the boat?
I've made a topic in the private cricsim forum with some of the questions I'm a bit stumped on, if you have some time to have a look at those in the next few days. Thought that would be the best way to see if anyone in the community can also chip in with suggestions without having others doing the quiz coming across any answers
Appreciate the effort anyway. Its a typically difficult quiz with rather obscure questions!
Bloody typical! That'll teach me to log onto the forum before wrestling with a decrepit old scanner!
Ah, no need! Magazine finally arrived in the mail today :) I'll try to get through as much of the quiz as I can over the next few days and let you know if I need your expertise on any of the questions!
That'd be great, thank you! Hope the weather holds up over then there. Lovely here so hoping that continues for when your lot arrive in a few weeks to smash us off the park!
Hasn't arrived yet, mail is always horribly slow here over Christmas and early January. I've been doing a lot of travelling lately anyway so wouldn't have had much time to work on answers until now. That'd be great if you could provide a copy of the questions, I just hope the deadline's not too soon!
Hey Martin, bit late asking this year but are you still subscribed to TWC/The Cricketer? Is there a Christmas quiz this year in January's edition?
Should have a review of CMJ's India book for the weekend after this one. I thought it would be a good one to feature first as there's a lot about Greig, obviously.
I was watching Inside Cricket tonight. Allan Border, Brendon Julian and Mark Waugh were having a chat with Viv Richards. When asked which of the pace battery was the quickest, Viv opted for Sylvers.
