Compared to the others who managed to get a gig with England in the strikers role? Some of them are probably no better IMO.
To be fair to Phillips - he did get 30+ in the Premiership didn't he?

I'd agree. When he first emerged Hartson looked the business. Before the pies & the knees lessened his effectiveness there were no better quote-unquote English centre-forwards around save Wallsend's King of the Elbow & (possibly) Mad Stan.

If players like Ricketts, Johnson & Jeffers are given a go I have absolutely no doubt John would've been given a go too.

But but but

He's Welsh fat and ginger and plays in Scotland. I mean come on!
You might be a bit too young to remember (said the old man patronisingly... :p), but when he played for us he was really pretty decent. Then went to The Irons & his goals pretty much kept them up. Great in the air & decent touch for a big fella.

Trouble is he was always a header, never looked after himslef & has/had dodgy knees. The last two points may or may not be connected....

I remember him playing for you lot, I might possibly have seen him in his Luton days at the hallowed PP. He was ginger and Welsh back then as well.

Don't remember him doing anything of note for the Arsenal mind you, but seems as you go watch them I spose I'll take your word for it. It slipped my mind that he was a former gooner and obviously that's why you're sticking up for him. :)

Now if I remember correctly, didn't you sign Chris Kiwomya at the same time??    (laugh)

Yep. He was....a good player at his level......pacy, fast & quick....speedy....er....

Big John actually got us the equaliser that took us to ET v Zaragoza in the CWC final in 1995. Setting us up for Nayim from the halfway line. Hmmm, on balance maybe it wasn't such a good thing....

Tranmere played Wolves at home shortly after that CWC final.

Our announcer goes, "this one's for David Seaman."

On came Looking back over my shoulder by Mike and the Mechanics

You probably won't thank me for that will you?

Apparently according to Fergies autobiography, Martin Edwards didnt want united to sign Dwight Yorke, but John Hartson instead, but fergie didnt see him as a united player... He had enough about him to be worthy of a England call up (well, it'd be more of a GB international side if that was the case), dunno about being the best of the best, certainly would've been 2nd fiddle during the Shearer/Sherringham and Shearer/Owen times... might have picked up 10 caps from the bench, much like Andy Cole did (who was a far better striker than Hartson, well when he was on form at least)

To be honest I can't moan too much about him - yes he said he'd stick with us after we went down, but since we bought him for something like £50k a game and then Cetic paid £6m for him 3 months later it wasn't too bad.

Your board made a great habit of making profits on your strikers when you had to sell them didn't they?

Sold Keane for 14m and I think a profit was made when Bellamy was sold.

Yes, we did have a lot of players in and out for big profits around then (nicely a lot coming from Villa!!!)

Boateng cost £250k, sold for £4.5m
Hadji cost £2m, sold for £4.5m
Dublin cost £2m, sold for £6m

Then there was Keane cost £6m, sold for £14m
Bellamy came as his replacement for £6.5m and was sold for about that.

So if anyone can tell me why pretty soon after all those sales we were £30m in debt I'd be much obliged!

Don't think the Board were being too honest then with the books?

A bit like River Plate I read in a recent edition of FourFourTwo where they had sold US$150m worth of players in the last ten years and the manager at the time (they go through so many quicker then Shane Warne has a one-night stand) but had not anything to buy players.

Fine. Strike off one FA Cup, and one Cup-Winners' Cup from the record AND Paisley's ratio is still better.

Way to worsen your own cause :)
But we weren't talking FA Cups and Cup-Winner's Cups were we..?

Paisley's ratio may be better, but I can't imagine it'd be by much - and anyway, Ferguson has IMO lost it - in his prime I reckon the ratio would be better (and over a longer period too).

Well continuing after you've lost it is arrogant, and your legacy should reflect that. It's fair enough a player wishing to play as long as they can, but if a manager no longer has "it" then they should step down.

No we weren't specifically talking Cups, but if that's the era you wanna compare, then you have to strike Fergie's first two titles from the record. In the interest of fairness.

But still, their League title records are both impressive, no doubting that. BUT Paisley won three European Cups in his time. fergie has had more chances, more money, plus the luxury of a group stage and second place, third place, fourth place qualifying, and has still only managed one, with the world's richest club. Not good enough, and therefore he cannot be cited as the most succesful manager in English football, that is clearly Bob Paisley.

Yes you're right, and it's part of the reason that I don't really like him anymore. But still, when he was good, he was great.

As for European Cups, yes we should have won more, no disputing that.

You can hardly blame him the last three seasons though. It'd take a super human manager to beat the performances that happened to win the titles recently.

Word on the Merseyside streets is that Rooney has stated he is gonna "do him in"
