2024–25 NZ domestic season

Declarations are for wimps.
It helps when you're captain though, aye!

Also interesting that Auckland, having used 9 bowlers, haven't opted for Solia to bowl. Must be injured in some way (or as captain is trying to avoid the carnage!)

EDIT: And that's Bruce gone for 345 and 3rd highest score in NZ Domestics.

EDIT2: And they're batting on!

Congrats Bruce on the 300, phenomenal innings. Seems churlish though disappointed he didn't surpass at least the second place Sutcliffe score on that list.

Bruce is a really fine player and might've had the potential to do something Mitchell-like for NZ, if Mitchell hadn't done it first. A similar powerful ball striker who sets the tempo.

He really shouldn't have spent so much time batting down the order for CD - quite a while at 6 and then a long time at 5. This certainly affected how much I valued his runs, and probably did the NZ selectors too, particularly with CD's pitches usually on the flatter side. Bruce also always in Will Young's shadow as an NZ prospect from CD.

There fundamentally just haven't been spots up for grabs in NZ's middle order the last several years though. Aside from Nicholls eventually getting punted for Rachin.
Interesting thing about the Mitchell peer-comparison, and taking that eventual spot.

Funnily enough. Mitchell also probably spent years at 6 or 5, or maybe even 7? for ND at the same time Bruce was too low down the order for CD.
But at that time, Mitchell was the Neesham. de Grandhomme and Corey Anderson rival, not a top 4/5 specialist batsman contender.

But, when the Red Sea parted Mitchell was in the right position. His number six-i-ness got him into test and ODI 11s as CdG replacement, and then his lack of test match wickets (and penetration) and bundles of runs and composure got him up the order.

Edit: I just looked up in cricket archive some random FC matches to see exactly when Mitchell moved up from being a 6 to a 4 or 5 for ND.
And you know what? What I wrote and crossed out above is complete garbage.
He was basically a 4 from his first season. Funny how a categorisation inside my own head (he can bowl good 5th seamer stuff, therefore he is a 6) can totally cloud the actual reality.

But this bit is still true, despite being a FC #4: His number six-i-ness got him into test and ODI 11s

Haha, I know the feeling of looking something up on Cricinfo/cricket archive and finding I was completely wrong too.

My vague recollection of Mitchell in ND's middle order is that I didn't think he was up to much, which shows what I know. I blame his Cricinfo profile pic at the time tbh.

Hard-to-believe reaction time from Mariu on that O'Donnell dismissal. Get him in the test team for his fielding.
I assumed you were having a muddleheaded moment here and git them round the wring way, because the opposite happened in the other innings. RO'D taking a screamer to dismiss Mariu.

My early recollections (and rating) of Mitchell at ND was that he looked Ricky Ponting v pace, and Chris Harris on a bad day v spin.

Lots of times in televised white ball games he just couldn't even work singles v domestic level spin. (also same in Champions Trophy).
But totally destroyed anything fast and short.

blocky rated the **** out of him which put us off him a bit iirc
I genuinely don't remember that, though you may be right.

Definitely the good pull shot and ability to face quick short pitched bowling was evident from the earliest videos. Shows that's a pretty good base for a batting technique tbh, while other things like playing spin better can be learned.

Will Williams turning up in the Hawke Cup Challenge match at Pukekura, alongside a (probably load-restricted) Shipley. Nice to see, albeit somewhat mean to Taranaki.

It's my firm opinion that Bevon Jacobs is stupid talented and he should be given an NZ contract ASAP. That said, there've been a lot of sketchy shots in this 150.

Some bright knocks from Mariu and Robinson too.

And two wickets from dropping catches the right way towards the end of the ND innings. You love to see it.

And thanks to a Randell concussion, Tom Bruce has a rare chance at having 12 bowlers appear on the bowling card. 9 down, just him and the keepers to go.

(It would also mean we could say "21 bowlers were used in total in Auckland, and not one of them was Sean Solia.")
