1st Match - Pakistan v New Zealand

Babar chat aside, this has been a hugely impressive performance (so far...) from NZ.
It looked the most straightforward group to read, and one game in it seems to be proving just that. It's hard to imagine NZ/India not being the semi finalists here.....and quite possibly the finalists too (I think only SA can challenge them).

Not Terrible
Pakistan needed more of their hitters to step up and their best one Fakhar was injured.
They're not a particularly good ODI team, batting is very very reliant on 1 of 3 players scoring a big one, and their bowlers leak runs like crazy. Haris Rauf still getting games outside of T20s boggles the mind.

I see Pakistan and England as polarly opposite teams with similar issues.

England don't make enough runs for their bowlers to defend, and Pakistan don't take enough wickets to give their batters a target they can chase.

On the other hand, Afghanistan and New Zealand to me seem like teams who know exactly what their strengths and weaknesses are and play accordingly.

They lack some firepower with their batting but their tailenders are showing some firepower, more than some of their batsmen.

This is not an easy pitch to bat on , it's turning, some balls are keeping low , Rizwan and the Commentators got the pitch report horribly wrong .
Not an easy pitch to bat on but it got easier if you batted long enough on it as Young., Latham and Phillips showed. even Babar but he lacked support.

I'm a bit sceptical of how NZ's bowling will go against the better batting sides, Pakistan are somehow a favourable matchup for their attack in this format and they've managed to boss them more than you'd expect. That said it's a better attack than the one put out in the 2023 WC, Bracewell and O'Rourke are good additions and not having to rely on a bunch of overs from Neesham and Southee.

I feel like Pakistan just don't put genuine efforts to correct the mistakes they've been making (I don't watch a lot of their bilaterals so correct me if I'm wrong). They've been making the same mistakes since forever: playing too defensively and being over-reliant on a new ball heavy bowling attack to do wonders with the ball. It was clear way back in 2021 that Babar wasn't fit for opening and yet he continues to open the innings even in 2025. Harris Rauf is only good against 2nd string batting lineups in the middle overs, and they know it. Yet they continue to back him for some reason.

Who gets MoM for you guys? Latham or Young?
I know statistically Latham has the better knock , but Young held the innings together after those early stumbles. I'd give it to him.
