Malcolm Marshall vs Gary Sobers

Marshall suffers from the longevity argument. Most of his success came in a relatively short span of time(83-91). Like a more flamboyant Ken Barrington.

Marshall has the following qualifiers:

- Relatively shorter career compared to Hadlee and McGrath and shorter peak worldclass period

- Only really played one strong batting lineup in his prime, India 83. The Aussie, Pak and Eng batting sides he played were generally poorer to the ones Hadlee bowled against early 80s, late 70s.

- Thanks to his ATG bowling support, it helped shield his stats especially average and SR, in particular in his late career phase when he was 4th seamer whereas McGrath and Hadlee led their attack right to the end and didn't need to hide.

At the time of his retirement, Marshall played more Tests than Roberts, Holding and Garner.

Marshall : 81 Tests
Hadlee : 86 Tests
Imran : 88 Tests

Even though his career was relatively less lengthy, him playing the similar amount of Tests as other legends in 70s & 80s meant his longevity is often ignored

I didn’t compare both. Just Saying their career trajectories are similar. Even their retirements was beyond their control. One retired due to politics. One retired due to health issues.

Ken debuted in 1955. Became a regular in 1959.
Maco debuted in 1978. Became a regular in 1983.

Both had extreme success for a relatively short time
59-68 : 80 Tests. 6754 runs @ 59.77. 20 tons.
83-91 : 69 Tests. 342 wkts @ 19.86. 22 5-Fer

My mistake, they were Indian still doesn't stop the umpiring from the 3rd test especially from being trash. Close lbws not being given, time wasting etc. If you followed the same match i did and know better, please enlighten me/us...

I didn’t realise players could be out for close things tbh. Could help some of the controversy with some of those close to being grounded catches and umpires call DRS.
