Steyn is arguably the 4th greatest bowler of all time, don't see how Gilchrist beats that with his keeping or batting.

Unique doesn't make one better or more valuable.

Haha yeah in like his first ever post or something close to that he said he thought people really over-rated past players and then explained that what he meant by that was... Tendulkar.
How about this post

No modern player , not an all time xi.
Why no cook, who is considered as the greatest Eng batsmans along side with root?
XI contained Tendulkar, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath

I think the concept of having a player like him is rated pretty fairly, but the actual standard is his batting is quite over-rated by some people IMO.
The fact that Gilchrist was so so far ahead of every other player who played his role at the time can't be overstated imo. Don't think he's some all timer with the bat but the fact that he was able to combine that with really top quality keeping (which I weirdly think is very underrated not sure if you agree) made him one of the most valuable players ever imo.

Steyn still better though of course.

Gilchrist's overall impact is rightly regarded extremely high and he was arguably the death of the specialist keeper.

But purely as a batsman, he is overrated. His batting average (obviously combined with the strike rate) is a symbol of his value down the order (especially considering his secondary skillset&high impact explosiveness), but no way is he actually a 47avg level Test bat.

And I do think he's an ATG, I have him in the top 20, but I also have Steyn borderline top 10, 11th to be exact.

Where would you rank Gilly purely as a gliveman?
