But purely as a batsman, he is overrated. His batting average (obviously combined with the strike rate) is a symbol of his value down the order (especially considering his secondary skillset&high impact explosiveness), but no way is he actually a 47avg level Test bat.
Him averaging in the 60s in his first few years contributed to his super high rating as a keeper bat.

And Gilly was a brilliant and impactful player, just not better than Steyn.

With regards to his batting being over rated, I mainly don't get how he escapes all of the criticism thrown at Punter, while batting 4 places lower in the order.

Other than that, while I agree he wasn't a 47 average level batsman, his aggression made him a cheat code that low down the order.

It's what makes Steyn better.

He was very arguably the 4th best bowler ever, I don't see how Gilchrist surpasses that. Gilchrist is more the final piece to the puzzle than the main man on a team.
