It has to do with just the style.

Look at this, this is what a fast bowler is meant to be even today, 90mph+, swing, aggressive attitude and bowling and the ability to rip apart lineups. Even the mighty windies quaret was created because Lloyd saw Lillee in 75-76.

Lillee is the godfather of modern pace bowling, and that's why he has such a rep.
Still think it's a bit more than that.

Top 10 for me currently
Marshall
Hadlee/McGrath
Ambrose/Steyn
Donald/Imran
Garner/Lillee/Akram
Mt canundrun with Lillee is this. Been doing a lot of reading, and even looking at stuff on line from the era. And I've literally not seen a single person rank Imran as better than Lillee, and even with Hadlee it's pretty clear cut. Every batsman from the 70's of 80's would say Marshall or Lillee. Even when additional names were added it was Holding and Hadlee.

And no, Lillee's numbers weren't as great, but the batsmen who faced them were also caught up with the facade?

I don't know, I have him 9th over all between Imran and O'Reilly.
