Konstas missing Shield to carry drinks and then Inglis playing as a bat would also be mega stupid. Surely Handscomb is better for that role and surely Konstas would be better off staying home and playing if he's gonna be a reserve for a two Test series.

It seems to be circling around the worst of all possible worlds.
Handscomb did poorly in the last india tour. he deserves to be dropped.

This is the XI. Captain Smith basically confirmed it. you want two left arm spinners in the subcontinent to bowl from both ends if the pitch works for it. You also have two offies if the pitch works for that also ,its a bit of a lottery the subcontinent pitches but having enough spinners is the key.

Australia always does “well” when we stack the team with spinners

Ordinary bowlers are still ordinary whatever type of bowlers they happen to be

Fun fact: the last time we won a series in India, we picked our best attack

Hey weren't you the one saying that picking more than one spinner in India last time was a terrible idea that wouldn't possibly work?

I'm sure if it would have gone great though if we had stacked our game full of fast bowlers on those dustbowls...

I do think the nature of wickets has changed a lot since the 2000's though. The last 10-15 years in particular wickets in the subcontinent are much spinnier (and subcontinential batsmen often less good against spin) than what they used to be IMO.

Yeah if you watch the highlights of the 2004 series, it's been a long long time since we've played on pitches like that in India. Or SL. Travis Head has been a significantly more dangerous bowler than basically any hit-the-deck Australian quick on those.

On the typical wickets SL dish up for us part time spinners are often better than fast bowlers with 300 wickets

Do you think SL might not cook the pitches too badly this time around? They've managed to put together a pretty effective pace attack as of late.

That 2016 series when our batters fell in a heap against Herath and Dilruwan was the last very bad subcontinent series we've put in. Since then we've got better in both departments on raging turners and seem to be pretty close to parity with the hosts on such pitches. The NZ in India series may also give them pause for thought.

Especially as 2 of the Aussie "big 3" are not there with Cummins and Hazlewood out.

That series much more about India than NZ though given that SL defenestrated that same NZ team mere weeks prior.

Well there's the reason Abbott is in the squad instead of Richardson who just can't seem to stay fit.

Richardson is out of BBL to undergo shoulder surgery as a result of the "high-five" celebration injury in November. Makes you wonder how he made the Test squad for last 2 BGT tests with that lingering injury

More pointedly, he's bowled up to 146 km/h and generally looked very good since then, bowling consistently quicker than for several prior seasons.

Considering he played Big Bash after the SL squad announcement I highly doubt it was all preplanned in that way at all

Am I the only one who thinks it’s good experience to join the squad, train with them for dustbowls for a week or so in the lead up, maybe even play a practice game? He’s 19, I think he’ll have many more chances to play Shield cricket than have a few weeks to exclusively focus on his game against spin.

Looked pretty cooked last game tbf. Maybe it's popped up again recently? Could barely land the ball on the pitch vs Smith.

Yeah I don't love Konstas missing Shield but people are forgetting that because this tour starts so soon, he's only actually going to miss max one Shield game.
