1. Dennis Lillee benefitted from playing in pace friendly pitches and he is overrated.
2. Dennis Lillee is one of the greatest bowlers of all time and his impact on fast bowling is unparalleled leading to many getting inspired by him.

Fans think of him in one of the two ways.

Why not both?

Murali because of the holes in Lillees record.
You've said this in a few threads now so I'm wondering what holes you perceive to be in his record. Could it be:

(1) Didn't play in India. No tours to India were scheduled during his career, how can he be marked down for that

(2) Didn't play in West Indies. He was selected on one tour where he had to go home because of a broken back (did prove himself in WI during WSC)

(3) Didn't play in South Aftica. No tours during his time

(4) Only averaged 35 in Sri Lanka. Lillee played one Test so hardly enough sample to judge

(5) Didn't bowl well in Pakistan. No pace bowler did as pitches were absolute roads on his only tour. Even Rod Marsh bowled 10 overs as Australia bowled everyone on those highways

Dennis Lillee played 60 out of 70 Tests in Australia and England which are known to be favourable to fast bowlers.

He was unproven elsewhere and that is a huge reason why many others including myself hesitate to place him among Top 10 fast bowlers.

Gaps in record doesn't mean he failed. It means he is unproven.

Lillee is unproven in the SC. And WI yes he had some decent returns in WSC though not quite worldclass level and still a low sample there.

Sorry but marking a player down because they didn't play somewhere is ridulous. Does that mean Bradman was an over rated hack because he didn't play in New Zealand, West Indies, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or South Africa?

Bradman played 52 out of 52 tests in Australia and England. I guess that makes him even more unproven than Lillee
