It made more sense when there were more draws, so time was more likely a factor, and when there’d were rest days and longer gaps between tests.
We've also got an 18 year old fast bowler , and Jansen whose also a youngster that make up half the bowling attack would have been nice to manage them better. I don't expect Conrad to come out and say the follow on was a mistake , but hopefully this experience teaches them a lesson.

You could argue enforcing the follow on is the only chance Pakistan had of staying in the game ,a fielding outfit leaking runs on a good batting pitch with little rest is ideal for Pak.

I still think that was an entirely defensible decision tbh. That's how silly I think following on is if you're not time-crunched.
Could not possibly disagree more strongly. Conditions were clearly tilted so far in favour of bowling that choosing otherwise was nothing short of batshit insane

Genuinely the thing Steve Smith has done that I loathe the most out of anything

That being said however, I do definitely think the follow on was the wrong call from South Africa here, no doubt about that

SA Frontline Bowler workloads in the test so far without an innings rest :

Maharaj - 43 overs
Rabada - 36 overs
Jansen - 31 overs
Mulder - 23 overs
Maphaka - 21.2 overs

Absolutely unnecessary , hope nobody gets injured as they approach 180 overs in the field

Great fightback shown by Pak but now Pak will be stuck with Masood forever. Must say SA are a very mediocre team these days, Pak at their worst are giving them a good fight in their own conditions. If this was played in Pak, not sure SA would have even taken it to a 5th day.

Absolutely the right decision to enforce the follow on. Given how Pak have batted, not sure SA would have been comfortable with giving them anything short of 550.

If Pakistan chased down 550 with an attack that rested for 50/60 overs on a day 4 & 5 pitch they deserve to win , apart from winning early there is no other positive to enforcing the follow on the way we did , good weather , great batting conditions and plenty of time is not ideal follow on conditions.
