Pre-1991, very few households had television sets and hence Gavaskar exploits were known either by newspapers and radios.

The economic reforms of 1991 ensured more people had access to tv and this resulted in Indians actually seeing Sachin Tendulkar play.

The explosion in middle class having more money led to India’s dominance as cricket’s financial capital and Sachin as the most popular cricketer.

Viv Richards and Hutton aren't very popular either. Not just in Ind but in other areas too.Not in Lara and Sachin level popularity

With the exception of the legendary Don Bradman and to a much lesser extent Gary Sobers, most cricketers that played before 1970 aren’t famous in India.

Well many people who follow cricket stats know Bradman name comes up because of that batting average. He is like Pele who has highest goals record even if you don't follow football much.

I have never seen a single game ice hockey. Even if I see the most popular ice hockey player, I wouldn’t recognise them but even I have heard of one name - Wayne Gretzky.

Yeah outside here people overrate Kallis a bit as they just go by raw numbers so immediately think he was Tendulkar level at batting and Zaheer level at bowling.
