Help me figure out who the No. 5 in my AT XI should be (Richards vs Others)

who should be the no. 5?

Yeah, that's why I mentioned they can't be taken at face value. I don't think he was nowhere as good as an actual 50 averaging batter.

It looks like people like Viv so much that they want him at number 4 even if it makes no sense to have him over Sachin.

At 4 : 41 inn. 1566 runs @ 41. 4 centuries.
At 5 : 63 inn. 2720 runs @ 47. 6 centuries.
At 3 : 59 inn. 3508 runs @ 61. 12 centuries.

It's an entirely different setup in an ATG XI.

He needs a challenge and no.4 is far more worthy of that. He needs to give the frontal assault.

Tendulkar is adaptable at any position.

At this level, wouldn't even categorize Gilchrist as a proper batsman, and even Australia was reluctant to bat him up there.

Imran and Hadlee will not be that reliable, nor would they be likely to get the big scores to make up that disadvantage.

There's a reason why no one else proposes such teams.

And again, 5 bowlers plus Sobers is just too much, and at least one wouldn't be properly utilized.

Stop looking at spread sheets dude.

A batsman of this calibre can bat anywhere and in such a team like this he's better suited to no. 4. He's better vs pace, Sachin vs spin, he keeps the momentum going, Sachin probably better in a crisis. Sachin also fall in-between the carnage of Bradman and Richards, and Sobers and Gilchrist. It's the perfect balance imo.

Not everything has an answer in a spreadsheet, watch the game and develop a feel and understanding. There's lots of grey and nuance in cricket.

I prefer a batsman who can build an innings with lower order at that position and don’t believe with his style Viv can manage it.

Why would Sachin need to build an innings with the lower order though? Are you assuming the lineup is gonna collapse?

Viv was at his prime when he played at no.3, that explains the gap in average. Guess I can switch Viv and Sachin, as Viv was a better player of pace. Viv would average higher at no.4 if he had played in that position in his prime anyway.

I am picking Gary Sobers at number 5 over Viv

Sobers played mostly at 5/6, has a great record as well and can play with a level head as well.
