Hopefully Smith can get a few today. No disrespect to Southee, but with Santner coming back in Timmy really shouldn't play in Wellington and Hamilton

Thought in first innings Southee and Woakes looked the worst of the pace bowlers on view bar Stokes who looks totally out of rhythm after hardly bowling.

Was thinking I'd drop both but then Woakes was superb yesterday. Souther should play 1 and 3.

If Smith doesn't get runs could be done by lunch today.

Was thinking Hamilton and it's supposed assistance for spin was next test, so Santner might replace Southee before Southee gets a retirement tribute match the third test.

But now I realise it's Wellington then Hamilton, Southee will probably play all three.

There should be no room for people to get tribute tests. We are trying to win test matches against a fierce opponent, there should be no quarter asked or given and in this arena you must play your best 11 at all times. If Southee doesn’t cut the mustard then he shouldn’t play. Wagner got to be ceremonially announced as part of a final squad for a test series, but it was known that he wouldn’t play: that was his tribute & send off.
Tim also said he’d be available if we make the WTC Final. A bit tough on squad members to have him lob up and take someone’s spot. If you’re moving on, move on.
That said, any angst around Southee and the make up of the team for the next test would be considerably less had NZ simply taken their catches. Brook should have been dismissed for 18. NZ have put themselves under immense pressure and are in a horrible position through failing to execute basic skills and the bowlers ended up bowling a lot more overs than they should have.

Tbf to Tim we don't have any tests scheduled between the England series and an extremely unlikely possible spot in the WTC final, so he wouldn't be taking a spot.

We've really thrown away an extremely winnable test due to stupidity and the inability to catch a cricket ball. Unbelievable
350 in the first innings felt about par, but NZ got there by giving wickets away to average bowling. Then they fielded like muppets to let England get way more than they should.

But no doubt England upped their bowling in the 2nd innings, wickets were earnt not gifted.

I’d say the first innings English bowling was accurate. There was nothing wrong with the deliveries NZ batsmen were getting themselves out to, they were just largely innocuous. Bash wasn’t pinning people LBW or bowling them, it was a failure to properly execute shots.
NZ were the rankest of rank underdogs against India, expected to be given a pasting….and that seemed to give us the mental freedom to perform. Back home with heightened expectations we have mentally capitulated, even with the addition of Kane and his runs.

‘Wouldn’t be taking a spot’ would apply provided there isn’t a better option than Tim Southee. Probably I was too harsh on him though, particularly if there is an injury and he is available to step into the breach.
