Unpopular Cricket Opinions

Shady Slim

Unpopular among complete morons maybe, but absolutely 100% correct

No other case of ball tampering has ever had a penalty applied even close to the magnitude, it is just an insane overreaction
Probably the most popular opinion of all time

Every human with a functional frontal cortex knows they were absurd
inb4 “hurhur exactly you just proved it” but i do bigleague support the bans and think it’s ridiculous smith is vc now. was great that a board saw their players megacheated and accordingly acted

33 in England. Ofcourse you would love him.
Test averages of overseas batsmen in England 1951-63, when pitches and English bowling probably made conditions most difficult. Minimum 15 innings.

39 - Kanhai
35 - Sobers
32 - McGlew
31 - Harvey
30 - Worrell
29 - McLean, Waite
24 - Davidson, Cheetham
23 - Goddard, Miller
22 - McDonald
19 - Hanif
18 - Umrigar
17 - Lindwall
14 - Tayfield, Benaud
13 - Roy

Probably explains why Kanhai was rated higher than Sobers by some in till mid 60s.

Fmd spare me the pearl clutching. No other board has even levied anything even close to that degree of penalty either before and after and you damn well know that. And don't give me any of that **** about "wAaAh MuH CuLtUrE" either, there was all sorts of nonsense flying back and forth from both sides all that series (and more broadly from pretty much evey team in world cricket about then), but to only look to Australia in that is yet another blatant example of you basically ignoring anything and everything that doesn't fit in with your preconceived biases

Leave the cricket discussion to people who actually follow the game through good and bad, as opposed to you swanning around like you own the place when things line up with your feelings and then being conspicuously absent on the (very frequent) instances where things do not

The thing that was wrong with the entire proceeding is that it was unjust. The punishment did not fit the crime. In fact it was cruel. Additionally CA, who should've been held to account over the culture they created, threw the players under the bus and then took cover beneath the outrage. The whole incident should offend anybody's natural sense of justice.

respectfully, seems to me you've used me voicing an unpopular cricket opinion in the unpopular cricket opinions thread to randomly agitate the grievance you have against me which is really rich given you're whinging about me having "preconceived biases". i'm happy to discuss competing views about the fairness of an unpopular penalty with you in the unpoplar cricket opinions thread but i'm not gonna do it if you're just gonna trojan horse in your weird vendetta against me brother

i think it personally did, and i would like to think i of all people have an outsized natural sense of justice. i agree that CA should've been taken to task for letting that culture foment, but there's just something to me which is so icky about bringing sandpaper onto the pitch to alter the condition of the ball, which feels to me personally just, dirtier than the murray mints, heck dirtier than afridi taking a bite

What a load of self obsessed drivel. You are the one who dredged up a post from a month ago (complete with smarmy and unnessecary "you'll probably hate this" comment) and now you want to turn around and try to say I was the one trying to start anything personal? Absolute hot garbage that

It may have been a factor. On their more difficult pitches, English bowlers of this generation tended to rate Worrell highest among West Indians.

It is perhaps unfair to compare overseas batsmen with English ones on rain-damaged wickets given the gulf in experience. But a handful of overseas batsmen earned reputations to rival their English counterparts. They included Trumper, Noble, Headley, Merchant and Neil Harvey. During the period under review Harvey played outstanding bad-wicket innings at Durban and Leeds (three times).

Interesting. I actually knew that Harvey had a good reputation in England in stickies, but forgot that. His overall average there then is kinda shocking.

brother i didn't post here at all for like the first two weeks of november because i was busy w stuff and i'm only just catching up don't import some sinister explanation into literally everything i do because you think i'm a jerk! i did not have a "smarmy" and "unnecessary" comment attached to my post! i'm just a guy posting his potentially unpopular cricket opinion on a thread for doing exactly that! i quoted your post and TJB's because they both dealt with a topic of particular interest to me! i'm sorry i don't devote fealty to you on issues where we disagree just because you watch more domestix! (which is a thing that makes your posts on cricket and particularly australian cricket very engaging and informative posts)!

Yet again zero self awareness whatsover. There is absolutely no purpose at all to putting such a comment out there at all apart from trying to make everything about yourself as per usual.

And as for the "fealty" remark, no I certainly don't want you blowing smoke up my arse, be bloody nice if you would stop blowing it up your own though

okay, no. both of the posts i quoted essentially said you have to be lobotomised to share the opinion that i happen to:

so i was getting out in front of someone who might've wanted to reply to my post along those lines! it's not that deep friend!

Well, you pretty much do though

Seriously though, I would think it's a trash opinion no matter who expressed it. The fact that "it just feels worse" was the strongest argument you could mount speaks volumes of how utterly without basis it is to think that
