Competition as well as injuries. Gillespie was injured for most of Fleming's career too, if not Fleming might have played a lot less even. Brett Lee coming along and Gillespie being more available post-2000 pretty much finished him.
I doubt it. He'd have played over the likes of Kasprowicz and Bichel. For hypothetical fitness, as you've applied to Gillespie, if you did the same for Fleming, he probably goes on the 97 Ashes tour instead of Kasprowicz. Instead he didn't play a single test between early 95 and 98.

You're probably right. From memory Fleming wouldn't have been the worst seam bowler in the side in most of the games he played around 1998 and 1999. There would have usually been a 3rd seamer wo'd be left out before he was. Still reckon the eruption of young Brett Lee on the scene and Gillespie's extended return around 2000-01 would have just about spelled the end of his career regardless of injuries though.

India no longer produces world class players of spin and are as circumspect as any other SENA batsmen.

There were enough tests where someone was injured in that period that you could add a few more tests on for a theoretically fit Fleming, or where there was an extra spot available. Like he could have played Bichel's three tests in the 02/03 Ahses.

Though I wouldn't have seen him displacing Bichel on the 03 tour of the West Indies, where Bichel was playing as an allrounder. One of our odder team compositions that one.
