The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Bolo.

I’m not sure where the line for an aggressive bat is. Is Gambhir considered aggressive?
Sachin in my mind fills that role, along with Hutton. That's somewhat good enough
IDK where the line sits, but Sachin definitely falls on the aggressive side of it.

And an slow number 1 doesn't change how aggressive the next 6 will be. I'm not fielding a grinder at the expense of a better player just for variety, but it wouldn't hurt.

Honestly, if Sobers didn't exist (and ignoring Grace), I have 2 combinations:

Comb 1:

Hobbs
Gavaskar
Bradman*
Tendulkar
Lara
Kallis/Hammond (leaning slightly Kallis here)
Gilchrist+
Imran
Hadlee
Marshall
Murali

Comb 2:

Hobbs
Gavaskar
Bradman*
Tendulkar
Richards
Sangakkara+
Imran
Hadlee
Marshall
Warne
Murali

Combo 1 looks better to me although I'd have Mcgrath for Imran

Who slots in though? And who even are the candidates?

I think Sachin, though capable of being explosive, can effectively play the grinder role, especially in this line up.

Do you recall how you railed against this argument with regards to Imran?

Just saying. Which is it? And I never even used that terminology.
For me it's like someone arguing Shaun Pollock over Hadlee because Pollock can bat better. That's how you sound with Kallis over Hammond.

Except I have explained the differences in Imran's and Kallis' roles and selection.
Imran isn't as good as Marshall, McGrath or Hadlee.

Don't think even you would argue that.

It's the same premise that you are strenuously using to argue against Kallis.

Not watering down the bowling right?

Actually agrees with Subs, the other 3 are all new ball bowlers, Imran is the best here with reverse and as a first change.
But didn't we have an entire thread about who was the best old ball bowler and Wasim won handily, if I recall Imran didn't get a single vote.

Wasim might be slightly better with the old ball the Imran, but the later brings more to the team.

Yes. The way I have broke it down for a complete attack is:

All-round swing, seamer, reverser, spinner.

First XI: Marshall, McGrath, Imran, Warne

Second XI: Lillee, Hadlee, Steyn, Murali

Third XI: Trueman/Donald, Ambrose, Wasim, O'Reilly

Hopefully Bumrah ups his game and breaks into the best bowler conversations so that we don't need to debate this. Although then, Hadlee vs Mcgrath would be interesting too

I consider Wasim more skilled but Imran more destructive. Plus if we are talking a third seamer, I see Imran more suitable.

I will attack you with this later when you downgrade Ashwin away. Thanks.
