Ha, that's definitely not accurate. Although I did find it interesting (but bit my tongue) when some posters recently made a comment along the lines of wanting to bring Duffy into the side in place of Southee to have more height/bounce in the team. That seemed to me to be dealing in very fine margins since the height difference between the two might be an inch?
An inch can be very important

For posterity:

Ed Smith's best mate got way too much rope.

Ed was giving his mate the chances he didn't get in 2003. It’s not that Denly was a bad cricketer, he was perfectly serviceable. But Smith’s attachment to him meant he was blind to other options and because of that friendship James Hildreth never got to play for England.

They would never admit it, but we all know that was what was going on.

If you chose a team based on 2024 performance and left out anyone averaging under 30 with the bat or over 30 with the ball you'd get this side in bold, but if you reduce the cut off to the overseas tours (5 tests) you get the same side plus italics:

1.
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Ravindra
5. Young
6. Phillips
7.
8. Santner
9. Henry
10. Jamieson/Patel
11. O'Rourke

Solution: make the captain keep and bring in a new opener - or Mitchell to open

Wasn’t england in nz like last year or something
England test tours to NZ in recent years:

2017/18: 2 tests
2019/20: 2 tests
2022/23: 2 tests

Now
24/25: 3 tests

We've also played over there a lot and have 3 tests in England (and 1 in Ireland) in 2026.

2022/23 was 2 tests. This is our first three match series at home since South Africa in 2016/17.

You can't drop Phillips. Since returning to the test side he's been our 3rd best player behind Henry and Ravindra.

Either Young stays as back up, or Latham takes the keeping gloves instead of Blundell as we go all out for 3-0 and a place in the WTC final

Willing them to somehow find a spot for Young despite what selection problems it causes. He's gone as close as you can to earning it.

I'm not so sure Young has changed his spots. He has been scoring awesome 50s on minefields since he was young. His issue is throwing away starts on motorways.

I suspect he would have scored the same if the Indian decks were flat.

Hopefully he has changed, but it's still a risk.
