England players and selection discussion thread

Baz says Cox has improved leaps and bounds as a keeper. So, we might be in for a surprise.

But how are Mccullum and Stokes openly announcing that Cox will keep in this series when the squad is not even announced?

I keep reading about the ECB's selection policy, or England's selection. But is there a selection panel or is it just Rob Key (maybe plus McCullum)?

Lest we forget the original tour party to West Indies included: Bethel, Jacks, Livingstone, Mousley and Salt. I assume the latter four are no longer in Rob Key's mind after being leap frogged by Bethel.

Is Hull injured or discarded after originally being selected for Pakistan.

Didn't the West Indies go similarly left field selecting Mikyle Louis to tour England? He now has 5 tests and an average of 21. Plus a stand out run out.

In the first part, I assume you mean re potential members of the test squad? I would have thought Salt has no chance of that and Jacks/Livingstone haven't played very much FC cricket (not that this is necessarily a bar!)
Hull was injured.

Yeah, is weird to say the least. I guess a few folk from the old 247 forum would be delighted.............

I guess though, that the management really haven't identified who else should be stepping in to the batting lineup if someone drops down injured.

Given the last 3 Tests it's very hard to suggest who is the number 1 spinner.
Leach's standing has probably suffered after his relative lack of impact in the 2nd and 3rd tests. Bashir wasn't outstanding, but I suppose he's still very young. Rehan had one good spell but he still reminded me of as talented teenager who's been given a game with the adults in a Sunday league side. With bat as well as ball, actually. It will take more than being precocious to consistently cut it at this level.

I do wonder whether Vaughan Jnr will be given a go sooner rather than later, especially as his batting potentially makes him a viable number 7 or 8.

If you were picking a bloke for just one series then even someone like Simpson should've been considered. Had a stellar season with the bat (averaged 75 I think) and an excellent keeper. I'm just not sure how this really helps Cox, how does batting in an alien position having kept wicket show him in his best light? It would actually make more sense for him to bat 3 and Pope keep and bat 7.
Just like Lawrence, it seems like we are 'rewarding' our reserve bat. The batting role shouldn't be too alien to Cox, middle order in New Zealand, but what if he starts to make a few mistakes with the gloves, will that seep into his batting?

That should be a 'when' rather than an 'if'. If the bloke keeps perfectly then he's some kind of freak.

Exactly. Cox has played 53 fc matches, keeping wicket in only six of them, most recently in July 2023.

In white-ball cricket he has kept in one List A game, and 33 times in 125 T20s (including The Hundred), mainly for overseas franchises. Essex have never asked him to keep wicket in any format.

In all formats, when he keeps wicket he averages 24 with the bat.

I don't expect Pope will have kept in as many white-ball games, but seeing as he's kept in 2 Tests, can he match Cox's FC record?
