If it's still 50-50 after 70 odd votes, the only thing you can say is...it's contentious lol and there's no convincing the other side. Stats don't lie and Ashwin's are pretty incredible (best S/R among all bowlers with 500+ wickets?). But then again, stats don't lie and his suffer in certain aspects we consider crucial in evaluating a player's prowess. Good time to close the vote IMO; you won't get a fairer appraisal than this.
It's sad that we are this far into this thread and haven't defined ATG.

Yeah much of the hate I got in this thread was because for me there are 3-4 at best and Ashwin ain't there.
Respectable imo. General consensus of the top spinners would look something like this:-
1. Muttiah Muralitharan
2. Shane Warne
3. Bill O'Reilly
4. Clarrie Grimmett
5. Jim Laker
6. Hedley Verity
7. Anil Kumble
8. Ravichandran Ashwin
9. Hugh Tayfield
10. Derek Underwood
11. Lance Gibbs
I would say the first 3 are undoubtedly ATG's. After that, it becomes very much arguable.

Push Ashwin at 4 and the rest is fine.

Not set in stone. I am just sad when it becomes too expansive. I have around 30 to 35 ATGs total. Posters here have 50-60 commonly. That's really watering the word down.
I mean, both numbers are completely arbitrary, there is nothing really wrong in both. And most of the hate you got for me was because you said Laker was ATG and considering Ashwin as one was far-fetched at the start of the thread.

I have only the first two as ATGs. O Reilly is close but I just can't have him.

Looks about right though I think Lyon should make top 10.

Let's count:
1. Marshall
2. McGrath
3. Hadlee
4. Murali
5. Warne
6. Steyn
7. Imran
8. Ambrose
9. Akram
10. Lillee
11. Donald
12. Garner
13. Holding (maybe, not sure)
Barnes could make this but I prefer not to rate pre WW1 players with more modern ones.
How many do you have?
Okay, I have many more:

  1. Marshall
  2. McGrath
  3. Hadlee
  4. Barnes
  5. Murali
  6. Warne
  7. Steyn
  8. Imran
  9. Ambrose
  10. O'Reilly
  11. Akram
  12. Donald
  13. Garner
  14. Lillee
  15. Lindwall
  16. Holding
  17. Trueman
  18. Davidson
  19. Waqar
  20. Walsh
  21. Cummins
  22. Pollock
  23. Roberts
  24. Ashwin
  25. Grimmett
  26. Anderson
  27. Spofforth

I think he is closer to the Ashwin/Verity/Laker/Kumble level of bowler rather than the top 2. He is definitely close but doesn't get in for me
I actually have O'Reilly in the same tier as Warne and Murali.

Could extend the list upto Waqar/Walsh level for me too, but the issue with O Reilly I have is sample size in test cricket.
Would be interesting to try and list all ATGs in all the categories: (Batsmen, Bowler, All rounder, WKB)
