*OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

GIMH

Norwood's on Fire
When I was a boy, I was introduced to Colin Cowdrey, who was England's No.1 run scorer at the time, and I think second only to Sobers in history. The world moves, he wouldn't make the top 40 run scorers now. Root is certainly the best of those who made it to No.1 since then (Boycott, Gooch, Cook) can't remember if Gower was there briefly but he'd be the only one to compare.
Gower was there between Boycott and Gooch yeah

Dravid, Kallis and Ponting will be easy to go past too now for Root. The question is, does he go past Sachin too?
I don't think it's possible if he was still worth his place in the side and say retires after the 2027 Ashes. Which could have to the potential as good way to bow out.

But as he'll only be 36 then and has actually looked back to his best at 33 and only getting better. Who knows how long he will play on for.

He should play as long as he enjoys the game doesnt matter 27 ashes or 29 ashes🙂

I think he will only break the record if it's something he wants to do = Playing Tests till it's done , I don't think you can beat Sachin's record if it's not an actual goal.
He also has to have some luck, you can't have a coach down the line asking you to retire even though you still among the best like what McCullum did to Anderson.

Yep nail on the head with everything you've said.

I doubt it's even in his head despite it being suggested to him by the ex pros that cover international cricket. Defs the sort of player that doesn't look beyond his current/next innings.

I'd say the only realistic chance we have is to bat till tea tomorrow and bowl them out on day 5 to win by an innings. Can't see it.
Yes I think try to get 700+ before declaring , that's a lead of around 150 , then see how Pakistan can survive the rest of the match , give the bowlers something to bowl at

That big a record, probably the most memorable in modern tests, would surely be in any batsman's mind imo

I know it's a hypothetical but it's very funny to see this with the score on 240 odd. They're still 300 behind lol

Definitely think Root should try for a triple hundred here ..Will he ever get a better chance ? Who was the last English batsman to get a triple hundred ?
Not since Gooch.

But scoring triple hundreds is hard, it doesn't just happen when you try for it. England are still more than 300 runs behind in the game with only one specialist bat left in the shed. Way too early for talk of triple centuries and declarations imo.

A triple is a bit of a pipe dream atm, but I don't think the others will bat for long enough if that becomes a possibility and even if they do, England will probably declare once they're in and around Pakistan's score. Not really in this regime's nature to resist declaring.

That didn't look out on first view. But the Root one did.

I guess I'll never make it as an umpire @GIMH

Well Harry time to bring back the 22/23 winter version of you thanks.
