The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

So I was thinking. Obviously Grimmett and maybe Stokes would make an ATG NZ side. Are there any other sides that would change if players represented the country of their birth? Would Khawaja make Pakistan? Don’t think Pietersen makes it. Flower might make it for SA tho?

I don't think Flower makes it for SA. That batting line up is stacked

Watling if SA picked a specialist keeper instead of AB (or Flower) in the XI.

Ranji instead of Kohli for India perhaps.

If Italy and Panama had ATG sides, Dexter and Headley.

Don't think Khawaja is better than Anwar, though quite debatable actually. FP gave some great options, though again, Waite/Watling is close; personally will go with Flower. Ranji/Kohli is also a very interesting debate.

I'm a huge Stokes fan, but I find it hard to fit him into an ATG NZ team. I got Watling at 6, Cairns at 7, then Vettori and Hadlee.

It's a choice between Cairns and Stokes at 7. Cairns is by far the better bowler and was very productive batting at 7 (averaged 44)

If Boult (new ball bowler) is in the team then a might go with Stokes (old ball bowler). If Wagner (old ball bowler) is in then so is Cairns (new ball bowler). I'm firmly in the Wagner over Boult camp, so more likely to go with Cairns.

If Vettori were in the team I'd agree with Cairns over Stokes as the tail would be super strong with Vettori and Hadlee at 8 and 9, so superior bowling from Cairns would give him the nod over Stokes.

However, remember that Grimmett is in the side for Vettori in this scenario, so having a stronger seamer (Cairns) is less important as suddenly the bowling is strengthened but the tail weakened.

The question then comes down to team balance. With Grimmett's ATG leggies (and the loss of Vettori's batting) I'd either go for the better batting allrounder option Stokes at 7 instead of Cairns, or an elite left-handed specialist bat in Donnelly at 6, with Watling at 7 and only 4 bowlers.

My AT ODI XI:

Sachin
Lara
Kohli
Richards
ABD
Dhoni
Kapil
Pollock
Akram
McGrath
Murali

Jayasuriya
Bevan
Klusener
Garner
Lara is nothing more than an AT VG ODI bat for mine, and should be nowhere near an AT XI.

Also with ABD in the side who can keep makes Dhoni's selection superfluous doesn't it? I'd rather either Klusener, Bevan or even Flintoff ahead of Dhoni at 6.

Dev at 7 pretty much makes Flintoff or Klusener redundant. Don't want to make my No 6 primary batsman, those 2 aren't cutting it with bat. Regarding Bevan, think he is an equal bat to Dhoni. So the wicketkeeping and captaincy makes it pretty much a no brainer for me, Dhoni being a harder hitter being a nice addon.
Regarding Lara, not sure. The other options are Rohit (quite similar to Tendulkar), Anwar, Greenidge, Waugh, Warner, Amla, Gilchrist (Dhoni keeping so nothing much here) and Jayasuriya. For now, will take Lara among them.

Lefties Test XI (must bat and bowl left handed - I made one exception for Gilly since he’s the keeper and never bowled in FC or Tests, but he was a right arm bowler)

Anwar
Morris
Sobers
Leyland
Lehmann
Border*
Gilchrist+
Jadeja
Wasim
Davidson
Starc

Pant has bowled in FC but not in tests so if I was going for purity and he did bowl lefties (idk what he bowled, cricinfo doesn’t list it) then he could be an option.

Middle order bats were pretty decimated by all the fake lefties.

Very strong tail at least.

Pollock, I read in an article he bowled left arm wrist spin but then also it says he bowled legbreak on cricinfo so I left him out - any clarity on that would be appreciated.

Shakeel and Mendis could perhaps shore up the middle order if their careers continue on their respective paths.

Bill Lawry bowled left handed, he definitely gets in; Roy Fredericks is another option. Frank Woolley is easily ahead of Lehmann overall IMO. Was surprised how many lefties bowled right armed.
