Chappell cleaned up in wsc vs the WI and in the WI at that. Not test cricket but that's good enough for me on top of everything else he accomplished.
Border was masterful vs peak Holding and Garner in the 81/82 series in Aus, and in WI 83/84, he stood tall while Marshall, Garner and Holding ripped everyone apart. He dominated peak Botham and Willis in 81 tour, stood his ground while Hadlee tore through everyone. He was one of the best players of spin of his time. And Border has a good record everywhere from 3-6. And batted for a good amount of time at 3 and especially 4. Waugh hid down the order, not Border

I wonder which one of those batted in a stronger batting order......

Why does Border not get the flak Shiv does for batting for his average? Similar batting position, SR, and number of NOs. IDK if they were actually similar, but I've seen quite a few scorecards of Border making a 50 or so NO at a stupidly low SR.

True. It's why TOTAB was much better in the lower middle order.

Border averages 47-48 at 3 for 36 innings and 50+ at 4 for a substantial time. Plus his record across conditions far better than Shiv. Border was very versatile and has a great record everywhere from 3-6

Yeah Border should get flak for battling it out successfully against Marshall, Garner and Holding while all others in his team fell apart

Border did play more than half of his innings at 5 and 6. His strike rate is pretty poor as well which is probably why he didn’t score that many hundreds.

He has a big sample size at 4 and a decent sample size at 3. Plus the bigger problem was everyone getting all out. I mean Border was a batting in a poor team for a good majority of the time.

Waugh did only play like 10 innings at 3 and 4 and mostly before his prime I think. Think he would have been fine up the order.

Chanderpaul did fail over a large sample size though

this comment is devoid of appreciation of the times. border was up there with the most 100s scored for his time. you try and score 100s with a toothpick and see whatvrate they come at. same thing for why scoring rates were slower back then. to hit a 4 you middled it with perfect timing.
if border played with todays bats, he'd have 46 centuries at a much better strike rate.
you could play backyard cricket back then with real bats without knocking palings out of place.

Didn’t Chappell also bat with a toothpick?

Well I mean you’re excusing Border’s hundred rate on account of his bat, Chappell batted with the same or worse equipment, scored tons way more often, and 50+ scores almost at the same rate.
Then think what should we do with Don't rate of hundreds with worse bats......
