Australian swimming can afford to set the selection bar really high but not so for say the steeplechase in athletics

Looks as if they fill positions for most events but some have less chance of being competitive than others (to put it nicely)

Team GB didn't select a male steeplechaser who broke the British record because he missed the qualifying time by 0.15, even though he would qualify through his world ranking.

I suppose it's up to Australia if they want to select a bunch of mediocre athletes.

Women's pole vault qualification - GB medal hope Molly Caudery has failed in her first 2 attempts at clearing a height (having gone in much higher than everyone else). One last attempt or she's out...

I wanna feel sorry for Caudery but it's hard not to root against someone rocking twin tails.

Pleased to see McCartney progress (even though I managed to miss her attempts entirely with badly timed channel-changing). She's been through a rough few years since her medal in Rio.

It's also hard to feel sorry when they decide to start at an unnecessarily challenging height. Everyone else started at least 15cm lower.

Yeah, she cleared 4.94 at 20, seemed destined to dominate the sport for the next decade, and then injuries left her barely able to walk. Hell of an achievement just to make it back to an Olympic final.

Given she cleared 4.90 earlier this year 4.55 would normally be seen as a not particularly challenging jump. But yeah, in an Olympics you'd normally think you'd want to give yourself a good warmup before things get tricky.

You're also putting completely unnecessary pressure on yourself though. Wonder if her coaches had a word to her about whether that was a good idea.

Most of those who cleared 4.40 qualified for the final, seemed like the more obvious starting point.

False starting ruling you out of the repechage too is ridiculous, what's the point of a repechage then?

I think it is to put all runners who didn't qualify in their heats on an even footing when they pick what would have previously been the 'lucky losers'.

I can't see how they could possibly do this and then make the start a free for all.
