If you trained for five years…

With 5 years of intense training I think most people would be at least able to finish the triathlon/marathon, that's something that you really can just train for. You'd be slow as **** but you'd technically finish.
I was actually going to back myself for the marathon to answer the original question.

2013/14 in 12 months I went from physically not being able to run due to being post-op knee surgery to running the Berlin Marathon in under 3:45.

That's obviously nowhere near an elite time, but I had a look at my training log on Garmin recently to compare against my running this year and I was shocked at how little I trained for it compared to how I remember (the month prior to the run is hilarious in hindsight, I did one 22 mile run 3 weeks prior but apart from that it's a totally random collection of runs in the 8k-12k bracket.)

Particularly in the year post-op, I limited myself in how often I ran per week generally to 2-3 runs.

Now I'm running 4 times a week (and planning to go up to 5 post half-marathon to do a really aggressive 5k training block), I think with 5 years of properly structured training I would back myself to be capable of running a time which would at least qualify me for the Olympics.

Handball is actually really physical and quite tough. Most people would get utterly rekt imo.

yeah. surprisingly long games but fast paced. physical contact is allowed. need to learn the defence strats. hand eye coordination for catching the ball while sprinting. gotta not be an embarrassment when throwing the ball. no thank you

It's just a sport that more or less doesn't exist in Ireland. It's like thinking that with 5 years of training you could become one of the top 5 Nguni stick fighters in Norway. It's obviously not because you think Nguni stick fighting is easy.

Does it exist over here either?

Only games I've ever known of where the ones we played in PE. They did anything they could to keep us from playing football in that grammar school

I may not be above ground in 5 years so I'll pass on the training and opt for 100 m sprint in the athletics. I'd feign a torn hamstring after a couple of strides and earn sympathy votes rather than the cringe associated with an embarrassing performance.

I don’t think so. It was never part of PE for us. I don’t think I’d even heard of it until I was in my 20s. There’s probably a bit more of it around now with EU immigration, but not much.

There’s a different Irish sport called handball, it’s a bit like squash where you use your hand instead of a racket. Still very obscure, but much more popular than Olympic handball.

I prefer the handball we played at school. With the concrete squares and the tennis ball.

Just false start and get immediately disqualified so you could then explain how you’d have won if only

I think pretending qualification isn’t a thing is a bit silly, otherwise it’s basically no different from ‘what event do you think you’re best equipped to finish today’.
None of us are getting close to making the olmypics for the 100m in five life times, let alone five years

Did Peter Schmeichel not play handball to a reasonable level, which was one of the reasons behind his ability to start counter attacks by throwing the ball 50 yards?

I don't think so, not to any meaningful extent.

Looking at the squad for 2012 we leant into the ringers. 6 out of 14 were raised in continental Yurp:

Jesper Parker - Swedish (Brit dad)
Sebastian Prieto - Monégasque (ditto)
Steven Larsson - British-born, moved to Sweden when young
Robin Garnham - Another Swede with a British father
Sebastien Edgar - Brit by birth, grew up in France
Gawain Vincent - French (Brit mum)

Based on this I'm picking handball after all, but specifically as keeper. Looks like their job is to stand helpless and pick the ball out the back of the net.
This applies to water polo too but you get a nice dip in the pool too
