Great lower order batting teams in history?

Really? surely not
Not sure if this is sarcasm, but yeah McGraths batting improved a fair bit.

Steve Waugh once took him on as a batting pupil but abandoned the cause when it seemed hopeless. But during his 10-month lay-off for ankle surgery, McGrath got serious. He went to the nets twice a week and stood in front of the ball machine. "I was probably hitting 500 balls a week, which before I would have been lucky to do in a month, if not two months," McGrath said last night. "Actually, that's probably being kind - probably 12 months."

McGrath remains convinced he started improving after Waugh, his "so-called batting coach", gave up on him.

Yeah I know it improved and it was a big talking point at the time, I just didn't realise he got so "good" that he was averaging 10 over a decent period. He still looked awful

McGraths averages under different captains/eras (Ponting and Waugh were the good years).

Yeah he was still pretty awful, but I think the main difference was that he started playing a few shots rather than just standing there with a bat in hand

I remember he was using the clean skin bat for a while, always jokes about him looking for a sponsor

It's not just that. His balls per dismissal did improve too. Up until the end of the 98-99 Ashes (when his career average was a shocking 4.52) he only faced 13.76 balls per dismissal. It was 21.37 thereafter so he was definitely lasting longer too.

Correct way to measure captaincy.

Australia's 7 to 11 on the final Test of their 1992 Sri Lanka tour was one of their strongest:

Greg Matthews
Ian Healy
Craig McDermott (should've been 11)
Shane Warne
Tony Dodemaide

Just as well they had a strong tail to save the match as none of Australia's top 5 reached 25 in either innings!
