Notable batsmen who performed better away

So not sure really what the point of this thread is. The vast majority of batsmen average more at home (usually signifcantly) here are some who didn’t. I’m sure there are varying reasons as to why they average more away, whether due to conditions, form or just luck with opposition. (looking at a baseline of 40 innings for this, gets rid of blokes like Voges and blokes who didn’t really play away - both Pollock and Headley have just over 40 innings and thats mostly where the majority of us really start rating) min overall average 45

Bradman 102.84 vs 98.22 +4.62
Barrington 69.18 vs 50.71 +18.47
Hammond 66.32 vs 50.06 +16.26
Hobbs 59.91 vs 52.29 +7.62
Tendulkar 54.74 vs 52.67 +2.07
Dravid 53.03 vs 51.35 +1.68
Gavaskar 52.11 vs 50.16 +1.95
Waugh 55.50 vs 47.58 +7.92
de Villiers 55.23 vs 47.40 +7.83
Border 56.57 vs 45.94 +10.63
Richards 50.50 vs 49.77 +0.73
Mitchell 49.29 va 48.44 +0.85
Harvey 51.43 vs 45.25 +6.18
Smith 54.98 vs 41.52 +13.46
Ponsford 62.40 vs 40.89 +21.51
McCabe 54.62 vs 42.43 +12.19
Dexter 53.65 vs 43.03 +10.62
Hendren 49.55 vs 44.29 +5.26
Gilchrist 49.69 vs 45.87 +3.82
Nurse 52.18 vs 40.61 +11.57
Lloyd 46.80 vs 46.46 +0.34
Morris 53.78 vs 41.18 +12.60
Amiss 51.33 vs 41.28 +10.05
Barlow 54.10 vs 40.97 +13.13
O’Neill 46.00 vs 45.12 +0.88
Matthews 45.94 vs 45.21 +0.73
Cook 46.48 vs 44.37 +2.11
Kirsten 42.30 vs 48.20 +4.90
Katich 45.49 vs 44.23 +1.26

29 out of 86 qualified players. Some of these aren’t very significant - probably all those below Gilly tbh. (4 is getting close to 10%) Which would leave us with 19.

And just for my own personal fun a breakdown of how many batsmen made it on to this list from each country, out of the total that met the qualifications

Australia 10/27
England 7/15
South Africa 5/9
West Indies 3/12
New Zealand 0/2
India 3/9
Pakistan 0/7
Sri Lanka 1/4
Zimbabwe 0/1

Honestly, Australia’s results here were pretty surprising.

Cowdrey generally averaged higher abroad. Averaged 59 overseas in the 60s. Has some impressive tons in Aus and WI.

Smith's gulf gets even bigger and rivals Amarnath's when looking outside the two minnow attacks and a poor WI attack.

34/51.

Nice work mate.
Australia is a minor surprise but based on recent impressions I guess as the likes of Hayden, Clarke, Warner, Hussey, Khawaja etc all averaged significantly more at home.

Interesting subject. No surprise to see some of the greats of the game in this list.

Would it be possible to clarify the bit I've quoted?

Is that 86 with more than 40 innings and an ave of at least 45?

On what basis are the 29 selected?

Also, on what basis are they sorted within the list of 29?

Yes, I believe there are 86 players to average more than 45 and 29 of them does more away.

All those in that list, averaging at least 52 away:
Bradman 102.84
Barrington 69.18
Hammond 66.32
Ponsford 62.40
Hobbs 59.91
Border 56.57
(S) Waugh 55.50
de Villiers 55.23
(G?) Smith 54.98
Tendulkar 54.74
McCabe 54.62
Barlow 54.10
Dravid 53.03
Gavaskar 52.11
Dexter 53.65
Nurse 52.18
(A?) Morris 53.78

Safe to say all of these guys can bat.

Btw, something that would be interesting to factor into an assessment of batsmen, would be the average average in their home country (particularly during the period of their career).

Probably the one that surprised me most was Ponsford, especially considering his ridiculous shield stats (averages over 80, well clear of anyone who played more than a single season, or 4 games across two seasons)

Crazy story on that bloke btw never heard of him before (thanks cricinfo)

Dr Owen Rock was a slightly-built, fast-scoring opening batsman who played in five matches for New South Wales in 1924-25 and 1925-26 after attracting attention with constant success for Sydney University. He made an immediate impact, scoring 127, 27*, 235 and 51 in his first two matches, and he was rewarded with an appearance in the Test Trial. However, he subsequently qualified as a doctor and played no more first-class cricket.

Imagine if Grace played no more cricket after becoming a doctor. (actually ‘79 so he would have already had his ridiculous early years and impact on the game)

Overall average at home is 32.09
Overall average away is 28.41

Any one that have Away - home more than -3.68 can be considered have to done better away than home.

Work that out for only batsmen (1-6) and you might have a point

Whatever it takes!!!
It is a bit misleading though as many batsmen minnow bash away from home. So not quite a sign of quality or anything.

The two that surprised me most were Ponsford and McCabe. You can rationalise Hobbs, Hammond and Hendren in that most of their away tests would have been in timeless tests on generally flatter wickets in Australia. However this reasoning does not work for the two Australians.

Especially Ponsford given his Bradmanesque dominance in Sheffield Shield.....
