The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Don't agree with either of those statements
As a top 4, which teams are in a different class to them?

And which pace attack is better than Steyn, Donald and Procter?

I rate Steyn above Imran, Donald above Wasim and career Procter has better peer reviews than career Waqar.

Barry Richards was not injured he showed his excellence in First Class Cricket and dominated the quality bowling attacks for a decade. Problem with Shane Bond is that his action had a huge strain on his body and could not recover.
Shane Bond also wasn't even that good when he did play. Great in white ball but in Tests he was basically a minnow/Asian team in NZ basher IIRC

Bowled NZ to our 1st series win in the Windies when they still had a quality top 6
Gayle, Hinds, Sarwan, Lara, Hooper, Chanderpaul

2 ATGs, 1 ATVG, 3 solid international batsmen.

Bowled out SA for 220 in his 1 test there (injured before the 2nd). Unfortunately never played a test vs England which cost us dearly as we would've been overwhelming favourites in 2004 had he been there.

I'd never heard of Donnelly so looked him up. Another great career interrupted by WW2 where he was a Tank Commander. Being in the NZ Hall of fame with only 7 Tests says it all really

this is a perfect team 2 openers, a strong middle order and allrounders till no 9 so this is a strong team has the potential to beat any team in the world on their good day.

Not much I would change, but probably Cowie for Boult (definitely closer) and definitely Sutcliffe for Latham. If not Sutcliffe then Stewei Dempster or John Wright or Mark Richardson or Devon Conway.... Latham isn't that good imo.

what about Ian Smith as Wicket Keeper ?
Not a good enough batsman. Watling and McCullum aren't much worse behind the stumps, and are level superior batsmen. Add to that that NZ hardly have any spinners (even Vettori doesn't turn much); and there is really no point in picking Smith. Heck, an argument can be made that McCullum and Watling are even better keepers.....

bert sutcliffe numbers look good so he can open the innings along with glenn turner. but why boult is underrated ?

I don't necessarily think Boult is underrated; it's not right to take Jamieson or Bond ahead of him, but Cowie is an interesting case pre WWII. His career was battered by the war and playing for NZ who just became a Test nation and hardly played much. For the limited chances he got, especially in FC games against practically Australia and England, he did very well. Many people believe he would an ATG if he played for Australia like Grimmett.

thats a bit hypothetical what if case. so will stick to boult. he is a modern day great 27 average is not bad in this era.
