To be fair, he was listed as a sub fielder today along with Colly (only 13 players were fit).Sending out Trescothick to do the interview

We were in the game in all the tests we've lost.Strange series this. For some reason it's felt better than the last one, but really it's been a drubbing.
England is playing at their level. About 1.5 to two tiers below India and Australia. Average players having a slog are still average players. We were in the game in all the tests we've lost.
But yeah the same result is going to be a real failing, especially after how much they moaned about the pitches last time.
Couldn't have asked for better pitches. The Joe Root of 2021 would have loved these pitches.
Has it though? Fourth test really could have gone either way and second test wasn't an absolute smashing. I've heard people say the scorecards from last time don't reflect the fact that England where in favourable positions at various points in those losses, but England also had India 3 down for **** all batting first on a road without their hax axar-ashwin tail and could have had them 4 down early if root didn't drop a sitter off rohit.Strange series this. For some reason it's felt better than the last one, but really it's been a drubbing.
I'm not sure about root honestly. His average on the sweep plummeted when the pitches got poor last series and have stayed that way this series to a point where in the past 3 innings he's put the shot away completely. We were in the game in all the tests we've lost.

Does needing rain to save you in a series count as "1.5 to two tiers"?England is playing at their level. About 1.5 to two tiers below India and Australia. Average players having a slog are still average players.
Cherry picking the only variable that didn't go England's way during the series is being slightly disingenuous.Does needing rain to save you in a series count as "1.5 to two tiers"?
Hey, we gave you a two Test Woakesless headstart and you couldn't capitalise.Cherry picking the only variable that didn't go England's way during the series is being slightly disingenuous.
England were playing at home and still couldn't get the job done.
Yeah I don't think the second and third tests was particularly close at all. Fourth one absolutely was though and is the one where they were way ahead in the game and just let it slip.Being competitive is staying withing touching distance of your opponents throughout the game which gives you the best chance of a decisive burst in the final stages. England instead have pulled into positions of relative ascendancy - relative being the key word here - in the first half only to capitulate entirely as the game's wore on, or even during the very same innings itself. That's not competitive enough for a Test IMO.
the Indian batting was better in 2020 for sure, Rahane had just come off a good tour in Oz and Pujara was also equally vital then. Rohit then was better than now, Gill was coming off a good debut series and Kohli played two of his most chanceless knocks in Adelaide and Chennai. even ignoring all of that Pant alone makes that batting better lol. its only in hindsight with 2021-23 that makes the batting look **** now but back then it was still goodHas it though? Fourth test really could have gone either way and second test wasn't an absolute smashing. I've heard people say the scorecards from last time don't reflect the fact that England where in favourable positions at various points in those losses, but England also had India 3 down for **** all batting first on a road without their hax axar-ashwin tail and could have had them 4 down early if root didn't drop a sitter off rohit.
India didn't have Pant this series and have missed other key players at various points, but in 2020 India didn't have jadeja who ide argue is a bigger miss, and didn't have axar in the first test. The 2023 batting lineup is also better in general. Indias #3-5 was non existent in that 2020 period and they didn't have jadeja, the lineup was basically the openers and pant+tail ender troll runs.
England have definitely been better than last time, but I don't think this means they've fantasticly or not missed key moments.
