The rating of each bowling attack is based on the career averages at the end of the series in question of the top 5 bowlers by overs bowled, in addition to any other bowler who bowled 10% of the overs. That big advantage to this is that you get a snapshot of the strength and/or reputation of each bowler at the time the series was played. And I can also apply these bowling attack ratings when adjusting the career averages of test batsmen.

Another way to do it would be to just base the strength of each bowling attack on the career home or away/neutral averages but as I posted before, the disadvantage to this is that bowlers such as Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee and Tim Southee would be rated on their careers in their first 10 appearances, rather than their bowling averages at the time, which were very high. I would appreciate any thoughts on this conundrum.
That top 5 is gonna be there for years to come.

Coronis

International Coach
I’m quite tickled that Clem’s only innings here outranks Trumper’s.

That top 5 is gonna be there for years to come.
I’m sure people would’ve said (just over 5 years ago now) that nobody would ever challenge Botham/Lara/VVS and here we are.

Days of Grace

International Captain
Update: Made it simpler to rate each attack by only including bowlers who bowled at least 10% of the team's overs. Not much has changed but Sehwag has moved to no.5 and Clem Hill moves to no.10.

I still haven't decided yet between
A: Rating bowling attacks the career averages at the end of the series for bowlers
or
B: Rating bowling attacks by the home/away career averages for bowlers

For knocks like Sobers' 365, there is a marked difference.

Method A:
Career average at end of series

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.

Method A:
+ Gives a snapshot of the relative strength of bowlers at the time of the series in question
+ No need to update data at a later point
- Bowlers such as the Indian spinners have a big difference in their home and away averages which is not reflected
- Favors bowlers who had a good start to their careers over bowlers who started off weak but then ended strongly.

Method B:
+ Bowlers who have large discrepancies in their home and away averages would be properly ranked.
+ Takes care of the lack of sample size as there is much more data.
- Need to constantly update
- Bowlers are rated over an entire career and not rated on their strength at the time of the series in question. Thus, Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee et al would be rated as 22.00 (i.e. great) bowlers in the early 1970s.

An alternative is to do career-to-date averages by location but this runs into sample size issues.

What are other posters' opinions about this?

Nothing will be perfect. It seems logical to say someone scoring runs against Hadlee in 1975 had an easier time of it than someone scoring runs against him in 1985, so I think career-to-date averages seem logically better than using final averages. However bowlers who had bad starts to their career (relatively) are then underweighted later in their career. Someone getting runs against Anderson in 2020 say when he'd been averaging about 22 for the previous five years isn't getting full credit because his career average was still 27. I think average in last x years might be better than either...

As for home and away, "away" seems a bit vague. If an Australian seam bowler plays most of their away tests in England, NZ, SA and WI, does that average mean much if the next test they play is in Dubai or Kolkota? (I get that if the wicket is wholly unsuitable to them, they probably won't bowl many overs so won't have much impact on the final attack rating...)

And I'll throw in a question on an innings. What would Gavaskar's Oval innings rating be if India had got the 10 or so runs they needed to win that match rather than draw it?

Thank you for your thoughts on the ratings. I will keep the career-to-date average formula for now.

To answer your question, Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval would be rated at about 16.75. The innings would be rated higher if Peter Willey did not bowl so much. I wonder why he was called on to bowl so many overs? Was there an injury?

Still means it would beat old Cuthbert's great 4th innings effort which is pretty rareified air.

I mean, a 221 innings in an away 4th innings run chase against Botham, Willis, Hendricks and Edmonds and taking the match to a draw with only 10 runs left to win is pretty rarefied itself.....

Hmm, I don't think I like the way you've chosen to rate the quality of opposition bowling/batting. Career averages up to that point effectively just show the reputation of the bowlers at the time. Feel like a "average in last 20 games" metric or some similar rolling average would come closer to more accurately showing how good those players were on the day.
