India - Ashwin - way better
England - Woakes - way better
New Zealand - Jamieson - better
South Africa - Jansen - way better
Bangladesh - Miraz - way better
West Indies - Holder - way better
Afghanistan - Rashid - very different players but roughly similar standard

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have tails like rats but Cummins is a below average #8.

Cummins showed a glimmer of hope as a batsman around 2018 but has generally been no more than a decent no.9 since. It was pretty silly he began batting above Starc then. Starc's scoring has fallen off since 2020 but he's generally been the better bat.

Describing Cummins as even slightly an allrounder is pretty silly.

I thought he had the potential to be one, but nah. He averages 16 and has two fifties. Most number 8s are better than that. Even his own number 9 is better than him but just worse at developing partnerships with set batsmen.
Yeah Cummins had a patch where he was going ok but then reverted to batting like a number 11 for a few years.

Now he's essentially a genuine tail-ender but has the knack of playing very important innings when it matters, especially in run chases

Cummins is a rank tail ender apart from the rare occasions where he morphs into an exceptional hitter or someone very difficult to dismiss

Seems to have a very good temperament but he can’t be relied upon in “normal” situations

I think you guys are watching the wrong games as Cummins is the #8 in ODI's but Starc is the incumbent #8 in Tests for the last 2 years (Cummins only bats #8 when Starc not playing)

Cummins and Starc is a funny one though and I even heard Cummins say it seems whoever bats #9 does better. This is shown in the stats also:

Cummins
#8 - 542 runs @ 13.89 (2 fifties)
#9 - 459 runs @ 20.86

Starc
#8 - 588 runs @ 15.89 (3 fifties)
#9 - 1094 runs @ 23.27 (6 fifties)

Yeah deleted my post after checking his average. Thought he averaged like 25 for some reason

In Warners last 25 Tests he's scored 1243 runs @ 28.90 with 1 hundred, the Boxing Day 200 vs South Africa

Warner would have been on a high that game as he celebrated his hundredth test so might do same in his last test. I don't think he deserves 3 tests to do so though

Warner also retired hurt on 200 being fatigued, came back in fresh next day and was out first ball (effectively resuming form with a golden duck)

Who else has ever been given such mandatory selection after 25 Tests of poor form both home and away
Who else has had such little competition for his place (which is what it really boils down to)?

The damage done with Warner was when he was selected for the overseas tours this year where he has been lousy for a long, long time.

Seemed awful at the time that fir the first India Test Warner was selected and not Head; looks even worse with hindsight.

I am sure that one of you stats nerds will dig somebody up but I am struggling to think of a single high profile Australian test cricketer in history who has been afforded as much latitude as Warner

Here’s some examples of guys who were either dumped or retired before they were pushed

Steve Waugh - averaged 80 in his last full year

AB - averaged 45 in his last 29 tests

Bill Lawry - averaged 40 in the series where he was dropped

Even Ian Healy averaged 40 with the bat in his last full year

As far as I can remember, Warner’s treatment is unprecedented in the modern history of Australian cricket

That’s why I say that he’s been gifted 3 farewells as there was no justification for his selection to either India or the Ashes

Ricky Ponting was pretty bad for a while except for that one golden Indian summer

But who was going to be picked instead of him? Yeah, his averages were awful, but the alternative was Harris!!
